Orchard on stand in Haywood trial details early activity

American Wins the English Derby at Epsom

Richard Croker's colt Orby with American jockey Johnny Reiff won the Derby at Epsom in wet conditions. Wool Winder placed second and Slieve Galion third as nine horses started. Orby was Irish bred from an American mare and owned by an American. The prize value was 6500 sovereigns. Royal spectators attended including King Edward and the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Mrs Eddy Trustees Lose Bid to Replace Next Friends

In Concord New Hampshire Judge Chamberlain denied a petition by three Mrs Mary Baker G Eddy trustees to substitute themselves as complainants in the suit seeking an accounting of Eddy s property. The trustees are Henry M Baker Josiah Fernand and Archibald McLellan of Boston. The next friends include George W Glover Mary Baker Glover Dr J Foster Eddy and George Baker. The case centers on control of Eddy s property and questions about her physical and mental condition.

Mayor Schmitz on Trial at Frisco

Assistant District Attorney Heney opened the prosecution in the case of Mayor Schmitz stating a plot with Ruet to carry on blackmail via the police commission. He spoke for an hour and called Police Commissioner Thomas Rea to testify.

Train wreck near Lebanon injures most aboard

Southern Railway passenger train from Nashville was wrecked three miles from Lebanon, Tenn. No deaths reported, but out of about sixty aboard, all but three were wounded.

180 Furniture Dealers Indicted Across Northwest

Indictments returned in a federal district court accuse 180 furniture dealers in Oregon, Idaho, and California of Sherman anti trust violations. The list spans manufacturers and retailers within the Oregon Retail Furniture Dealers’ association, Northwest Furniture Exchange, Portland Retail Furniture association, Lewiston Idaho club, and California dealers.

Monuments Erect to Mark Old Oregon Trail Route

The Women's Study League plans two blue lava rock monuments to mark the Old Oregon Trail. One stands at the West Side School grounds, seven foot staff with brass legend, funded by local citizens and schoolchildren. A second, four foot staff, will rise at The Dobes on Spring Creek, sixteen miles northwest of Pocatello. Ezra Meeker aided plans and fundraising proceeds. No ceremonies are planned at present.

Notable Musical Event This Evening At Y M C A

An elaborate program of violin music will be performed tonight by Karl Riedelsberger under the Y M C A auspices. He will provide explanatory remarks between numbers with accompaniment from Mrs. C. E. Brooks at piano and Everett Earl Lyman, basso, as soloist. The list includes Hungarian Dances by Wieniawski, Fantasie on Mignon, Credo, Hermoinesque, Romance, and Grande Military Fantasy by Leonard, with other pieces noted.

First Train Through Yellowstone Park Branch Planned

Oregon Short Line officials report the Yellowstone Park extension from St. Anthony to a 36 mile north terminus will push 17 miles farther to the park edge. The Yellowstone Special will run June 9 and the Teton Basin extension is being explored to serve new farms, towns, and tourism, with Bancroft and others set to visit the basin this month.

Earthquake Shakes Washington. brief tremor recorded

A distinct earthquake shock of small intensity was recorded at the Weather Bureau in Washington last night. The tremor began about 10:30 and lasted approximately one hour.

Pocatello to Celebrate Glorious Fourth of July

Citizens gathered at city hall under Mayor Loux to approve a city wide Fourth of July celebration. An executive committee of seven, led by the mayor, will organize finance, sports, music, decorations, fireworks and a program, with additional subcommittees to be named.

Third round in Perkins McCarty suit over saloon license in Pocatello

In Fifth District Court Judge Budge hears Perkins & McCarty petition to compel the city to grant a saloon license for a store room on South First Avenue. The case tests petition signatures after prior denials, with witnesses examined and a decision possibly tomorrow.
