President Truman begins an 8,500 mile western speaking tour aboard his special train through 16 states. The White House says the trip is official and non political while Republicans call it political. five major speeches are planned from Chicago to Los Angeles with key stops in Omaha Seattle and Berkeley. River closures tighten access around Carey and Shoshone

Solemn requiem high Mass for Leonard G. Layne a pioneer Poca resident who died Wednesday will be held Saturday at 9 o clock in St Josephs Catholic church with Monsignor Cody celebrant. The rosary is set for Friday at 8 in McHan Henderson chapel. Interment follows Monday in Mount Calvary Salt Lake City in the family plot. Funeral arrangements are under McHan Henderson direction.

Bernard Meese 84 a pioneer resident of Inkom died after a brief illness at a local hospital. Born October 1 1863 in Hanover Germany he married Elizabeth Hillman and they came to the United States in 1888. Survived by his wife four sons six daughters 36 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren. Funeral set for Saturday at 2 p.m. in the McHan Henderson chapel with burial in Mountain View cemetery.

Pocatello Council Hears Two Protests At Meeting
Two letters of protest were reviewed and routine business dispatched at the Thursday city council session. Mayor Phillips read a complaint about unsanitary conditions and a fire hazard on Nellie Bean property at West Clark and North Main, and the council authorized action directing her to seek relief through court channels. A second protest from ten West Center Street residents urged street sprucing in the 900 block. The council approved payments totaling $9,159.20 and $1,680 to Brennan and Cahoon.

Utahns Hurt In Accident Near Murray
Harry Thoreson 45 of Salt Lake City and Leo Littlefield 29 of Murray were injured in a Highway 30 crash near the city limits at 5 15 p m. Thoreson drove a 1947 pickup owned by Murray Plumbing and Appliance. Gail R Silcock 36 of Wendell drove a 1936 sedan. Both cars were badly damaged. Thoreson faces a driving while intoxicated charge and is in General Hospital in good condition. Littlefield was treated for minor injuries and expected to be released.
