Tornadoes swept rural Arkansas and Oklahoma killing at least 43 and injuring hundreds. Pine Bluff area bore the brunt with 37 reported dead and about 15 missing. In Leedey Oklahoma a large portion of the town was leveled with six deaths and around 25 injuries.
Santa Ana Calif The Overell yacht deaths trial entered its second week as attorneys seek a jury. Louise Overell 18 heiress to a 600000 estate arrived smiling in court while co defendant George Gollum appeared stoic. The pair face murder charges in the March 15 dynamited yacht death.
Senator Glen Taylor of Idaho denounces the Truman doctrine as risking war and civilization’s destruction. Speaking at a Jefferson Jackson dinner, he vows to oppose bypassing the United Nations and defends a dissenter stance against a so called Communist uproar as stupid witch hunting. The Democratic party must stay a fighting Liberal crusade for all people, he says.
Mrs Martha E. Truman aged 94 is reported by Brig. Gen Wallace Graham to be holding her own and resting comfortably in Grandview Missouri. The president's physician said her condition remains fair.
Dr. John R. Nichols was named the first president of Idaho State College at Moscow Pocatello effective June 1 with Joseph McCarthy as board president. Dr. Carl McIntosh becomes dean. he previously headed the speech department. The board also adopted rules on school bus safety under Senate Bill 143. Curley case and mail fraud convictions noted.
A three day conference in San Francisco announced the formation of the Pacific division of the Communications Workers of America. The new region will succeed ten NFTW affiliates as the NFTW national framework becomes the CWA nationwide. Donald Buckley was elected division eassey. Fifty delegates from California Nevada Washington Oregon and Idaho represented 25 000 workers. The group pledged an all out fight for unity despite potential jurisdictional disputes with the CIG AFL or local unions.
A 13 year old newspaper carrier Lester E Elmore was fatally wounded when a bullet struck him while delivering papers Saturday night. Ballistics experts examined .22 slug markings to locate the firearm. Police quoted witnesses Mrs D D Rice and Mrs C F Hagbery describing the shooting and arrival of the victim.
A black bear invaded a northwest Montana mountain area and seized a six week old calf. Prank Pickins fired one shot from 15 feet, hitting the 300 pound predator near the heart. The bear fell 100 feet from a hogwire fence and died. the calf survived.
Police chief R. J. Roubidoux warned that worm fishermen could be arrested for trespass as complaints spread about yards and gardens being dug for night crawlers. He noted the town enforcement of the trespassing ordinance and joked he may go without worms himself as an example.
Bela Varga former speaker of the house and No 2 man in Nagy government fled Hungary to avoid Communist arrest and was believed to be in Austria's American zone. Informant says he crossed to Copron near the border with help and a fast car. Nagy allies warn of treason charges if he discusses weekend political shifts with western diplomats.
Senator Henry Dworshak of Idaho calls for greater economy in the War Department citing a presidential commission report. He notes the army remains a large force and pushes for efficiency while supporting youth training mainly in civilian rather than military hands.
The House passed a Republican backed plan to cut income taxes by 4 million dollars annually starting July 1. The bill, expected to win Senate approval soon, would slash individual rates and rework withholdings, with detailed brackets for single and married filers and families.

Memorial weekend deaths reach 498 with 223 traffic fatalities eclipsing last year’s figure while two airline crashes and tornadoes in Oklahoma and Arkansas raise the toll. New York reports 68 fatalities led by the La Guardia crash. Maryland and California also show high counts.

An explosion at the American Cyanamid & Chemical Corporation near Edinburg Lawrence County wrecked two buildings. Merle Craven 55 and Robert Downing 38 of New Castle were confirmed dead. Nine others injured in the blast.
About 250 to 300 model planes expected at the Idaho state gas model air plane meet at Gowen Field next Sunday. Cecil Taylor of the Boise Model Club said participants will come from Salt Lake City Coeur d Alene Moscow Pocatello Twin Falls Caldwell and Nampa among others. Prizes will reach up to 25 in model plane parts for first place in several events.
