President Roosevelt calls for a graduated system of sugar production payments based on farm size and applies the same principle to the soil conservation plan. Des Moines area races show Dickinson leads GOP senatorial primary

Iowa results with 1,089 of 2,442 precincts reporting place Senator Lester J. Dickinson ahead in the Republican senatorial primary with 39.1 percent of 48,363 votes. Governor Clyde L. Herring tops the Democratic field with 49.1 percent in 1,115 precincts, while Brookhart remains runner up.

Star Witness Found Insane in Shepard Case

Grace Brandon, the government star witness in the Major Charles A. Shepard murder trial, was today committed to a hospital for the mentally unsound. The 30 year old stenographer testified of threats and buying a pistol amid the trials, while Dr. Goodson described her as suffering dementia praecox and likely dangerous to others.

Townsend Club No 1 Delegates to National Convention

At a meeting in the courthouse Townsend Club No 1 announced it is entitled to three delegates to the national convention in Cleveland in July. Delegates will be elected June 8 with the nominating committee of five to choose nominees for the next term. The July first meeting will elect and the advisory board meets next Monday. Thirty Italian Soldiers Slain in Ethiopian Conflict

Italian military authorities announced thirty air force troops escorting a supply column to Addis Ababa were wiped out by Ethiopian forces near the capital. The group attempted to reach the airport as Ethiopians attacked the imperial road between Makale and Addis Ababa. Reinforcements arrived too late.

McCormick dies after illness at 77 in Chicago

Cyrus Hall McCormick 77 former chairman of International Harvester died after a brief illness in Chicago. He suffered a heart attack at his Lake Forest estate and died at 11 30 am with wife Alice Holt McCormick and son Cyrus Jr. at his side. He was son of the inventor of the reaper and led the world’s largest farm implement company with 18 plants.

Lions convention keynoter urges constant service

Four Year University Movement Gets Local Endorsement

Paul V Nash secretary of the chamber of commerce and Lehnoff Furgeson student addressed the Kiwanis club at noon in support of a four year university. Club members endorsed the plan and signed membership cards to the four year army and organization with the chamber university relations committee. Army members address service clubs this week as part of Four Year University week observance.

CCC Boy Rescues Enrollee From Boiling Pool Near Old Faithful

Henry K. Smith CCC enrollee at Camp Nez Perce Yellowstone state park rescued fellow enrollee Woodrow Lescaleet from a boiling pool after a fall. Smith pulled him from the water, removed his clothing for first aid, and kept him conscious until reaching the camp infirmary. Lescaleet's condition later listed as fair at Park Hospital Livingston Montana.

Five Killed by Father Then Suicide in Dayton

Walter Johnson, 42, killed his wife Louetta 41 and four of his children Rose Marie 15 Elsie May 10 Marietta 8 and son Walter 12 before taking his own life. Police found a note detailing the sequence and times of each death and his claim that discord in the family drove the killings.

An Idaho General Hospital report says John P. Bishoff Jr and Marcus Bishoff of Blackfoot were injured in a Sunday auto collision north of Pocatello and have returned home. The other injured persons are said to be showing much improvement.

Fawn tagging plan faces slow start in Santa Barbara

Federal rangers in the Santa Barbara National Forest began placing bright brass ear tags on fawns as part of a deer survey after Washington orders. Within two weeks only four fawns were tagged, including two buck fawns cared for by a ranger's wife who feeds them.

Bank Messengers Robbed in Bronx Holdup

In the Bronx at Claremont Parkway and Washington Avenue, a bank messenger car was robbed of fifty thousand dollars after a swift ambush by three armed men. Theodore Frank and Arthur Tricer, guardians of the funds, were targeted. no shots were fired and police later found the bandits’ abandoned vehicle.

Idaho Sheep Shearing Season Expected to End June 10

Senate approves relief bill by 62 to 14 vote

The Senate passed a broad relief and deficiency appropriation bill by 62 to 14, moving the measure to a conference with the House. Dr A C Wherry of Salt Lake City attacked compulsory insurance dentistry as unfair to lay people in a talk at the Idaho state dental association’s 17th annual meeting. Edward A. Hayes, head of the Frank Knox for president committee, says Col. Knox advised Illinois delegates to vote for the Idaho candidate at Cleveland. He disputes Borah campaign claims that 26 Illinois delegates were released, noting Borah carried 10 districts and 20 delegates.

House to Vote Again on Western Reclamation Program

Washington June 2 Senate and house conferees failed to resolve differences in the interior department supply bill. They returned the 58 million dollar western reclamation program to the house for review and a new vote. The deadlock includes 16 projects, a four million dollar Indian irrigation program, and authorizations for existing constructions. The senate attached the 58 million to the deficiency relief bill, setting up a two bill approach.
