Lynch Probe Is Ordered In Govan Ward Lynching
Franklin County officers were ordered to seek the lynchers of Govan Ward a 25 year old black man who decapitated a white farmer. Solicitor William Y. Bickett arrangements for a judicial inquiry before a superior court judge with 25 or more witnesses subpoenaed. Governor Ehringhaus offered the standard $200 reward for the lynchers and pledged full cooperation from his office. Ward knocked Charles G. Stokes down and then used an axe to kill him when Stokes aided Sturgeon Ryscue who tried to stop the assault on Ward’s sister Rowena Kearney. Ward was seized by locals then later found dead swinging from a scrub oak ten miles northeast of here.
