Petrograd reports military critics urge calm and faith in the Russian army as observers anticipate a major maneuver. Some say the army may retreat from positions near Kovno Girodno and the Drestlitovak as German and Austro-Hungarian forces concentrate against Russia.
Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg, Germany’s imperial chancellor, summoned Ambassador Gerard after returning from the army headquarters. The coming conference is seen as likely to influence future Germany United States relations and the broader diplomatic course.

Berlin July 29 The army headquarters report German forces in Flanders destroyed a pontoon over the Furnes canal hosting heavy guns. In the Argonne mines were blown. North of Niemen the situation is unchanged. Northeast of Suwalki Germans occupy enemy trenches, taking 2910 prisoners and two machine guns. Russians launch repeated attacks but suffer heavy losses.
An aeroplane carrying a pilot and an observer fell from about a thousand feet at Tay Moulineaux France. Both men died in the crash one jumped and was killed on impact the other burned to death when the motor exploded.

The six and a half mile line, begun in 1912, operates by electricity and serves mainly tourists from Leuk to Leukerbad and access to the Gemmi pass bridle path at 7650 feet. Construction cost over 100000 dollars per mile.
