Flags fluttered as 40,000 spectators filled the Amsterdam Stadium for the ninth Olympiad opening ceremony. A sun break accompanied a 1,200-voice Dutch anthem choir while nations paraded. gate crowds spilled over as thousands were turned away amid a tense start and a gate dispute with a French official. Germany led a large return parade wearing distinctive uniforms.
In Holland Michigan a speedboat carrying five youths collided with the City of Holland, a side wheeler steamer. Paul Landwehr 31 died. John Nystrom 14, Zagl Van Lente 18, and John Arends 32 were injured. Witnesses said the boat circled the steamer and steering failed as waves were breached. Two other men, Robert Mendrano 24 and George Lyle 21, witnessed the crash.
Republican vice presidential nominee Senator Charles Curtis of Kansas will launch his eastern campaign in New York, likely Syracuse or New York City, as B. B. Moss of the Curtis for vice press club states Curtis seeks East engagement and a strategic start to win the Republican ticket.
Governor Smith sought rest in New York while maintaining political talks with Maryland Governor Ritchie. The two discussed campaign strategy and prohibition stance, with Ritchie urging a vigorous, wider stump tour across key states to boost Smith in November. Boise July 28 Idaho plans to annex part of Yellowstone Park to build a Bechler river dam that would flood the basin. Idaho offers a strip of land on the park's west side in exchange. Testimony from R E Thomas and George N Carter is sought as hearings begin Monday in Ashton by the public lands committees.
In Texas, five convicts fled from Imperial Prison farm after killing a guard and wounding two deputies. Scores of armed men with 35 bloodhounds hunted through marshes near Richmond as two more deputies were injured in the pursuit and one suspect was captured.
President Coolidge plans to accept Secretary Hoover's resignation soon and relieve him of all cabinet duties. He is narrowing candidates for commerce secretary and expects to appoint shortly while focusing on foreign affairs and anti war treaty negotiations with fourteen nations and anticipated Senate ratification.
Seattle July 28. Mrs Mabed Walker Willebrandt assistant attorney general warned that constitutional government in the United States will be jeopardised unless the nation’s lawyers uphold all laws, particularly the Volstead Act. She urged lawyers to reaffirm their duty to enforce prohibition.
