Mexico City July 28 AP government orders Catholic priests to hand churches to lay committees. churches to be run by mayor approved committees. Attorney General Ortega urges district attorneys and justice agents to declare support for government religious policy. Catholics rush to Mass as services may be halted after Saturday.
Wind and lightning hinder firefighters as 60 000 acres burn in Kaniksu and 45 000 acres scorched near Glacier Park. Thirty to fifty crews assist from Kootenai and Pend Oreille forests as electric storms ignite multiple blazes with several ranches burned and two firefighters injured.
Senator Borah of Idaho accused New York GOP leaders of avoiding the prohibition issue and fearing Al Smith's shadow. He said they backed a vague referendum to dodge clear stances and aimed to protect dry or wet votes, arguing the party resists a firm federal stance on enforcement.

The Radio Corporation of America reported that 10,000 questionnaires received a 99.3 percent rejection of women as radio announcers. Fans favored women as singers on the radio, but did not want them as announcers.
Colorado Springs reports Jack Dempsey will start sparring camp at Saratoga Springs, New York, on August 6 and will leave Colorado Springs next Monday. Floyd Fitzsimmons and Gus Wilson are arranging sparring partners as the champion notes Tunney is a fine fighter and defends his nose against doubt.
Washington July 2 AP The rights of states to conduct prohibition referendums are conceded by James J Britt counsel of the prohibition unit though no such referendum can change the constitution. In a letter to Senator Borah he notes states may vote on any subject they pronounce but cautions that actions affecting manufacture of liquor would face labor and risk.
Pittsburgh July 28 The arc welder with his hood and electric arc will replace rivetting hammers in erecting two welded steel buildings for the Western Electric Manufacturing company. Contracts for the welds at East Pittsburgh and Sharon were announced by vice president W Rugg before steel firms and technicians invited to witness tests of arc welded steel girders.
From Rome comes word that Mme Apasie Manos widow of King Alexander of Greece will wed Prince Trabia of Italy, brother to the Italian colonies minister. Manos wed Alexander in 1919 but the Greek government did not recognize the marriage until two years after his death.
Defense counsel and prosecutors plan to speed the trial of former Police Chief Zenaido Llanos and three others charged with alleged attacks linked to a death pact by two girls and their parents in San Diego. The second day begins at 9 a m with nearly a dozen witnesses left, and the trial may run through Thursday. Two defendants admitted charges while Llanos denied statements from Francisco Gonzales, a co defendant. A verdict would require seven of nine jurors and the maximum penalty ranges from six to eight years.
Mexico City July 28 AP security has been tightened as federal troops guard the chamber of deputies to prevent clashes between rival factions racing for control of the next congress. Officials denied a report that machine guns were installed to oust rivals. The chamber is not in session until September with socialist and labor parties, controlling the majority, accused of backing the alliance.
In Manchester, July 28, a funeral service for Robert Todd Lincoln son of President Lincoln was held this afternoon honoring his simple dignified wishes. The Congregational church pastor Rev D Cunningham-Craham officiated with family members among the pallbearers. Kkwanok country club where Lincoln served as president for 22 years closed for the day and a golf match was postponed.
Special dispatch from Mexico City says James R. Sheffield American ambassador to Mexico will depart for Washington on August 14 with what is termed confidential information for the White House.
Washington reports the War Department ordered 5,000 blankets to be shipped from Chicago to the forest service to aid in extinguishing fires along the Canadian border.
Federal agents and police arrested six more suspects in the Niagara frontier wood alcohol poison case. The death toll reaches 37, with James C. Voelker, alleged gang reader, ready to confess naming higher authorities in the illegal alcohol traffic. Voelker was tried in Canandaigua in 1922 for conspiring to violate prohibition law over theft from New York Central freight cars valued at over $250,000. he was not tried as the indictment was nolled. More than twenty indicted others in 1922 were sent to Atlanta prisons for varying terms.

In Dallas Texas delegates discuss removing Governor Miriam A Ferguson as Moody leads the primary by over 100000 votes. Some demand she resign immediately citing a signed pledge while others hope she will quit after the planned September 13 special legislative session. Representative Williamson says anti Ferguson forces will control both legislative branches to force her out.

The Hague July 28 officials state there is no danger of foot and mouth disease spreading through meat from infected animals. Dr. Urens, director of the state institute, confirms meat from diseased animals is safe to eat.
