In Butte Montana on July 26 an American eagle killed in the area bore a metal leg tag reading John Rodgers St. Louis TS85. It is believed Rodgers was a hunter and trapper once employed by the St. Louis Fur Company in this region.
Allied forces press along the Soissons Chateau-Thierry line with Villemontoire captured and Oulehy le Chateau seized, widening the advance south of the Marne. Americans push near Fere en Tardenois, clearing La Fere forest and Ris forest as Germans retreat in rear-guard action. Heavy shelling and gas use continue. British repulse a morning assault on the Meteren sector with sharp fighting.
London reports show Allies pressing German forces around the Soissons sector with determined resistance by the enemy on the heights behind Soissons. West of Rheims the Allies lost Mery and Hill 204 but held Wrigney and much of the line. Between the Oureq and Chateau Thierry the Franco American line advanced six to eight miles beyond last week.
With Americans along the Aisne Marne region the Franco American front northwest of Chateau Thierry has moved forward and allied lines eastward also progress. Americans at one point attacked an objective a kilometer distant while German resistance clings in hills and woodsusing machine guns artillery air forces and gas to hamper the advance.
With French forces advancing by noon on July 26 the capture of Oulehy le Chateau brings allies near the plateau summit overlooking Fere en Tardenois. Vil mtoire fell after a desperate street fight in the town.
New York July 26. The West in Union Telegraph company was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of transmitting messages by mail. Twenty one persons were indicted on charges of complicity in the theft of beef consigned to the United States army.
