A contingent of American troops arrived by steamer on July 28 amid cheers aboard the vessel and from a small crowd awaiting disembarkation. The men boarded tenders and departed for new quarters after a brief port display witnessed by officials.

Three Montpelier men enlisted at the marine station two were firemen and one a brakeman formerly with the Short Line. names Ernest Andrew Howse Harry Valorice and William Arthur Hopkins Richard Z Howard.
Reports from Petrograd describe three Czech regiments abandoned by Russian troops resisting to the end at Tarnopol. Officers reportedly blew out their brains and soldiers were shot as shells fell. The enemy claimed three Czechs were hanged after capturing three German prisoners.
Fergus Falls reports Al Palzer died from wounds inflicted by his father yesterday. The elder Palzer is held without bail as investigation continues. A separate jail case involves T Rance, a bartender, who cut his wrist seeking death amid alcohol territory concerns. He wandered from Salt Lake City and was found in a canyon near Pocatello. He shows signs of despondency and will be held for further inquiry.
War summary states Austro German forces advance through eastern Galicia toward Bukowina border with little opposition. In the west Crown Prince leads with heavy bombardment and liberal losses, but gains remain limited. British reports heavy fire from near the Pelzian border to the coast.

The sheriff opened the door to the county jail big cage and Moto refused to enter. He noted many inmates shared the same feeling about the place. A bank book on the prisoner showed he held considerable money.
