In Warsaw the Polish government forbids enforcing the Vatican excommunication against Communists and signals a church state armament negotiation. The ruling also states it will accept talks proposed by the Roman Catholic hierarchy to begin negotiations between the government and the episcopate.
The Spokane International Railroad conductor George Hopkins of Spokane died when a passenger train struck a stalled freight train about 20 miles northeast of Bonners Ferry Idaho. No passengers or other crew members were reported injured though the collision demolished the caboose and derailed the locomotive.
State Officer Jack Hunter reports two young men robbed a St. Anthony service station early this morning. They used a knife and wrench, escaped in a 1940 Studebaker truck, later abandoned near Lorenzo, and are believed to be on foot. Attendant described suspects as about 23 and 27, one 5 feet 10 inches, 150 pounds with glasses, maroon clothing, the other 6 feet, 175 pounds, blue Levi shirt and overalls, one with a missing right finger.
An Atlanta judge shot at rival lawyer John Lockwood during a dispute over nine court actions including divorce and alimony. Lockwood was wounded in the face and rescued from a muddy hole. Carpenter surrendered and was jailed on an aggravated assault charge after the early morning confrontation.
Representative Holmes of Washington introduces bills to rename four Snake River dams Ice Harbor to Whitman Lock and Dam, Lower Monumental to Lewis Lock, Little Goose to Clark Lock and Dam, and Lower Granite to Spalding Lock and Dam.

Francis E. Rose, 19, an army recruit from Denver, died at Hill Field base hospital after a jeep plunged from a road near Dugway proving grounds Utah. Dust reportedly blinded him as he drove his jeep along the road.
Alameda city officials authorize immediate construction of a new discharge line from the sewage disposal plant to the Portneu river. The line will bypass Copperville and Pocatello creek amid defense against criticism of the plant.
Secretary of State Acheson told reporters Congress should suspend judgment on the 1.45 billion foreign arms aid bill until all evidence is in. He said concerns raised by several lawmakers arise from theory, urging that an interim plan, already proposed by the administration, may be appropriate as more facts are gathered.
Mrs. Marty Francis Hardin, 24, arraigned before Justice Charles W. Hyde on mayhem charges after a broken milk bottle attack at 1408 Third Avenue. Shoster Grigges alleges facial injuries while Wilbert Tademy suffered hand and forearm cuts. bond set at 1500, woman jailed when not posted.
Idaho Falls will host the 1950 American Legion convention after a morning vote by Idaho members during the 31st Department meeting. The final committee reports were awaited as officers were elected and the auxiliary prepared to name its slate later today.
William M. Zink of the U S Engineer Corps begins a Portneuf River survey from Walla Walla to plan possible future improvements. Oliver Lewis will arrive tomorrow to lead the program in the same district.
Mayor W. W. Halsey and the city council endorsed a recommendation by the Pocatello Housing Authority to apply to the federal Public Housing Administration for a grant to survey needs for low rental housing. The authority operates Portneuf Park and Wyton projects and proposes at least 300 permanent units under a slum clearance plan funded by 40 year bonds.
A 20 year old girl Grace Cakeuras from the Bronx leaped from the Brooklyn Bridge and landed in the East River about 100 feet below. She survived and was in fair condition at Cumberland Hospital Brooklyn. She was rescued by a turboat crew and had been discharged recently from Bellevue Hospital observation ward.
Salt Lake City bids will be opened this week for a Salt Lake–Boise pipeline project. C. E. Finney of Salt Lake Pipeline Co., a subsidiary of Standard Oil of California, said the line will start toward Pasco, Washington as part of a larger plan. The line will transport gasoline heating oil and diesel.
C A Dahle Minnesota state senator drowned yesterday near Fort Frances Ontario at Lake Kabetogama. Initial reports confused his identity with former U S Senator Joseph H Ball of Minnesota. Dahle was identified by Sheriff Adolph Johnson of Orr Minnesota at the lake location.
John L Lewis rejected a two year extension offer from Northern and Western coal operators that would preserve the current contract and three day work week until March 31, 1951. The offer aimed to elide changes while maintaining existing terms for his leadership and miners.
A chartered passenger bus carrying Bannock and Utah county officials from a Oakland convention collided with a wheat truck near Wilbur Washington. One passenger Mark Johnson 56 Millard county commissioner lost both legs. The truck driver Oscar Henninger 46 and truck owner Guy Ellsworth 35 were not injured. The Washington state patrol continues the investigation.
The House approved an anti-poll tax bill amid strong Southern Democratic opposition. The measure would bar poll tax payments as a voting condition in primaries and general elections for president, vice president, and Congress, and moves to the Senate where it may face resistance.
The Union Pacific Railroad disclosed it is laying off 400 mechanical employees, including 220 in Omaha shops. The layoffs affect 25 in Nebraska, 40 in Wyoming, 25 in Kansas, 20 in California, 40 in Idaho, and 30 in the Oregon division, with 20 additional Omaha reductions.

The state board of examiners approved a $361 630 contract for a utility building at State Hospital South Blackfoot. C B Lauch Construction Co of Boise was awarded the contract. Brannan and Cahoon of Pocatello submitted the second bid of $388 509.

A five member Bannock county school district reorganization committee was formed Tuesday evening at the courthouse in Pocatello. Members are Dale Strong Lavern Johnson D H Gilbert Floyd Dalton and William Petty. The group replaces the former committee that ended July 1 under the 1949 act.
Washington reports the US military high command will fly to Europe to meet Atlantic Pact military chiefs. Generals Bradley Vaidenberg and Admiral Denfield with Maj. Gerhunther will brief Congress on the military assistance program and visit Frankfurt and Vienna.
