In a Lewiston letter Senator Borah declares there is no basis for a third party to advance immediate legislation. He says joining such a movement would not yield fruits and believes the country cannot achieve needed laws within twenty years. He adds he would join if it better accomplished reform though he doubts that path.
Lincoln Nebraska July 27 and agreement reached at a conference of Progres sive and regular Republicans last night to have presidential electors favorable to Roosevelt withdraw. Their places would be filled by men who will vote for Taft if elected. Governor Aldrich attended but may not carry out the plan and will stand by Roosevelt.
Edwin W. Sims former United States district attorney for Chicago returned from Oyster Bay and announced his withdrawal from the Progressive party over its Illinois state ticket nomination. Sims was a Roosevelt Chicago manager and was slated to be national chairman in the campaign.
Delegates totaling about four hundred from Utah counties gathered in Provo on July 21 to organize a third party, select delegates to Chicago, and discuss a state ticket. Wesley K. Walton, former state senator, called the convention to order while W. D. Livingston of San Pete opposed Taft instruction and was chosen temporary chairman.

San Francisco July 27 Patrolman Charles Bates was shot and killed by an unknown man who fled after the confrontation near his beat. Bates and a fellow officer spoke briefly when a stranger approached asking for hotel directions. Moments later two shots rang out as Bates lay incapacitated on the sidewalk, witnessed by a streetcar crew.
The wife of Elder W C Freeman and Lucian Simmons, a store employee, were arrested in Nashville on murder charges after Freeman was found slain in his Millie Tennessee store several days earlier.
In Provo Utah delegates were elected to the national Progressive convention in Chicago as Roosevelt supporters gathered to finish organizing the party in Utah.
Caldwell dispatch reports Canyon county resists placing a state ticket while progressives push nominating electors and delegates to Chicago. Roosevelt and Dixon reportedly back straight-line third party support. no name will run who won’t fight for the third party. Arthur H. Allen announced the Short Line will offer a one fare round trip to St Anthony.
Denver scene reports Andrew Golden a former Breckenridge smelter employee shot Florence Wood in her Glenarm Street room and then killed himself. Wood hospitalized with a back wound. Golden previously wounded her in Breckenridge and had recently returned to Denver after working in Pueblo.
Henri Deslovers, held for the alleged murder of Angele Parmentier, faced a preliminary hearing today in Woonsocket. Authorities report only circumstantial evidence and lack progress on the crime, with the headless nude body found in the Blackstone River over a month ago and no determined method or location of the murder.
The American team arriving Monday on the Vaderland from Stockholm will include about two score athletes. The Metropolitan A A U and others plan a large parade to City Hall for an official reception by New York City and state representatives.

Lake Charles La July 27 thirteen additional men indicted in the Grabow labor riot case were arrested today bringing total custody to 54. The conflict involved United Brotherhood workers and Galloway timber mill laborers. Three men were killed and over thirty wounded in the disturbance.

Copenhagen reports Captain Einar Mikkelsen and engineer Iversen, who led the 1910 Greenland search for Mylius Erickson’s party, have been rescued after crossing Greenland and arriving at Aalesund. The 1911 relief expedition previously returned without word on Mikkelsen, dashing hopes for his survival.
Paris marks the birth bicentenary of Abbe de l Epee founder of the deaf and dumb alphabet. A four day event opens with an international congress of deaf mutes and delegates from many countries attend. Epee trained as a priest but pioneered deaf education and invented the manual alphabet which became a standard aid.
