The Ways and Means Committee approved a 3.53 billion dollar tax bill to fund defense. It adds new surtaxes on individuals up to 75 percent for high incomes, and taxes on radio, billboards were kept out while estate taxes rose. The measure heads to the house floor with debate planned for early next week.
Rotary club members in Pocatello welcomed Julio Gerlein Jr of Barranquilla Colombia a Rotary International director and his party including Mrs Gerlein and Mr and Mrs Santo Domingo. They planned stops in Burley Twin Falls Elko Reno San Francisco Los Angeles New Orleans and New York. Gerlein urged Spanish education for Americans and promoted Yellow stone Park to attract South American tourists.
The forecast warns of an unusual heat spell with a high near 85 and a low around 66. Clouds bring thunderstorms today through Friday with lingering unsettled skies and a dramatic, almost never seen pattern described by the local forecaster.

Chicago July 24 A former ace detective on the state's attorney staff was convicted of murder in a major probe into a million dollar abortion syndicate tied to Daniel Moriarity. The jurors sentenced him to life. Moriarity confessed then denied acting as a go-between for the ring and staff members. The case followed suicides of Dr Henry Millstone and his widow after related charges emerged.
Berlin press, citing Moscow, said Adolf Hitler was ill and Generals Keitel and Von Brauchitsch were removed after eastern front reverses. Rommel recalled from Africa to take command while von Brauchitsch appeared with troops. Official Berlin offered no comment on the Moscow reports or Carl Clodius in Turkey.

A morning blaze at Harold Bennett's residence on 547 South Eleventh caused about 400 in damages. Fire Chief A A Girard said volunteers from two stations responded after the 4:24 a.m. alarm and controlled the fire within about ten minutes. Officials have not yet determined the exact cause but suspect paint and rags on the back porch started the blaze.
St George man Rudolph E. Lortz Jr. 25 was killed when his car left the highway and overturned on a curve. Passengers Eugene Wells 25 and Anthony Pace 26 escaped with minor injuries as the vehicle rolled 366 feet. State Patrolman L. A. Porter said high speed contributed to the crash.

Meanwhile Mussolini's forces claim success against British convoys in the Mediterranean as Soviet fronts show heavy fighting with no decisive turn.
Police identified the dead transient near the east switch shanty in Pocatello railroad yards as Jack Hanrahan. FBI fingerprints tied him to prior charges in California and Minnesota. Hanrahan was born in St. Paul and had resided in Mojave Summit City and Bakersfield. Coroner Hall seeks relatives. no known relatives listed.
Driver Jane Doe is charged in police court by Officer Fred H. Smullen with violating city ordinance section 34 for cutting through a pirate procession at the intersection of Center and Main at a specified time Wednesday.
