Washington reports describe twenty five rebel bands totaling about 35,000 opposing Carranza forces of roughly 60,000 in Mexico. The conflict centers on rail routes from Guaymas to San Blas and Tampico, with coordination suspected between northern and southern insurgents.
Washington July 23 The Senate was informed that on July 1 5955 railroad transportation passes and 1903 Pullman passes were in force Director General Hines said passes were issued only to executives of the railroad administration and to railroad officials and their families who normally received passes during private operation of the lines
About 2500 military prisoners at the United States disciplinary barracks in Leavenworth Kansas remained in their cells under guard after a mass refusal to work. They demanded shorter hours and better meals and no new disturbances had occurred by morning. Colonel Sedgwick Rice, the prison commandant, said no directive had been received from Washington on how to proceed.
Light rain cooled northern Idaho fires as crews battled multiple blazes. The Pack River fire expanded beyond 50 square miles and burned ranch buildings near McArthur. Bear Creek in Coeur d Alene forest burned 1200 to 1300 acres with 125 firefighters and five more sent. New lines were established as other fires remained active or contained.
Tonight and Thursday probably showers and cooler across Idaho. The forecast indicates a cool period with unsettled conditions lingering into Thursday.
A posse led by Deputies Bendixsen and Wheeler pursues George Chakines, accused of fatally shooting Paul Beno at a ranch on Little Pocatello Creek. A $200 reward is offered. Chakines has been located near Snake River. capture expected before nightfall. An inquest is set for Thursday at 2:30 at Schumacher Hall parlors.
Washington reports ongoing demobilization of the navy with 316 554 discharged since the armistice. Of these 94 306 were regulars and 222 248 reserve members released to inactive duty. About 70 000 reserve enlisted remain on duty, mainly aboard transports, and all reserve officers and men are expected to be released in two months. Recruiting has picked up to about 5000 monthly as fleets adjust.
Washington reports that about 20 000 American soldiers married foreign wives during wartime. Special regiments for these men and their wives will form units at Fort Myer Fort Ethan Allen Fort Oglethorpe and Madison Barracks with a Father of Families Veterans designation for the force.
Washington reports Secretary Lane asked Congress for a 500000 appropriation to combat wildfires in Montana Idaho and Washington. He said Idaho reports show fires cannot be extinguished without a heavy rain which currently has no prospect.
The secretary authorized 40000 for the land of ice field service to meet the emergency but stated it was not for forest fire fighting. Our Idaho agents report the aim is to prevent fires from spreading into a much wider area.
Washington July 22 Former President Taft approves reservation ideas on article 10 and the Monroe doctrine in letters to Senator Hays and other Republicans. Senate debate shows Republicans pushing a program administration may accept, with no final decision yet.
The president says reports claiming he originated or drafted the Shantung provisions in the German peace treaty are false. He states he used his influence to seek changes and believed Japan would ultimately act differently. Continued on Page 2.
More than 500 German prisoners, many from the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse and other raiders, left Amherst for Quebec to be transferred to an Atlantic liner for return to Germany. About 300 to 400 remain at the internment camp under guard.
