Three hospitalized victims from the station wagon crash near Arco on Saturday were improving by Monday at St. Anthony hospital. Arthur Carnes, most seriously hurt with head injuries, was in fair condition, while Darrell Eberts and Harley Markham remained in good condition. Four other passengers suffered minor injuries and were treated. one uninjured passenger was thrown through a window but unharmed. The accident occurred on a curve eight miles east of Arco when the Gustaveson Ford hood rose and blinded the driver at about 45 mph.
Syngman Rhee, 74, elected president of Korea in a vote by the new national assembly as Seoul establishes a government under American occupation. Kim Koo received 13 votes while North Korea remains a separate communist regime. Rhee previously chaired the assembly and studied at Princeton under Woodrow Wilson.
An Aeronca Champion took off from Auburn airport with mechanic Elwen Barton aboard as a pilotless plane sought to enter a door. It was last seen over Buckley heading into the Cascade mountains and is presumed to have crashed after exhausting four hours of fuel. Authorities warned commercial pilots to proceed with caution.
General John J. Pershing was buried Monday atop a tree lined slope in Arlington as cadets, soldiers, and staff memorialized him. Maj. Gen. Luther D. Miller offered the final benediction while the army paid respects to the nation’s commander who led troops from distant campaigns.
In an early Sunday ambush at a frontier outpost near the American Russian line, five U S soldiers were attacked by Koreans in civilian clothes using grenades and small arms. One American was killed and another wounded. attackers fled toward the Russian occupation zone. Names of the Americans were not released.
District Judge Isaac McDougall granted four divorces from court records. Myra Kidd Rose divorced Charles Rose—married April 16 1941 in Logan Utah—with cruelty grounds and a property settlement. Anna G Phippen divorced Wilford Kimball Phippen—married June 18 1923 in Salt Lake City—on cruelty desertion and non support with monthly sums for herself and a minor child. Veneta Egbert Weaver divorced William G Weaver—married May 15 1946 in Logan Utah—custody of a minor child and $30 monthly support. Thelma Boyack divorced Rex Boyack—married May 28 1936 in Idaho Falls—cruelty with custody of two minor children.
In Budapest a fatal shooting at the Yugoslav legation dormitory prompts a demand for questioning of Ziv Baarov, Yugoslav press attaché. Milos Morc, 30, Hungarian subject of Slav origin, was killed with four bullets. Yugoslav officials refuse to surrender Baarov despite three diplomatic requests from Hungary. Diplomatic notes signed by Minister Ernce Geroe highlight tensions amid Tito Cominform rifts.
Chicago hosts the railroad fair with two parade sections, military and railroad. Mrs John Luther Casey Jones leads the railroad segment honoring her late husband of the Casey Jones ballad. Southwest Indians and cowboy champions appear amid expected crowds for a fair running to Labor Day with Idaho and Utah days scheduled.
A sharp stock market plunge on Monday wiped out about 2.1 billion dollars in value, the largest drop since 1946. Trading surged to 1,163 of 1,410 issues down as prices fell from 1 to 12 dollars, with a late rally offering only partial relief.
Sen. Henry C. Dworshak says the United States must be prepared for any Berlin crisis development. He notes Washington leaders are divided over Russia's aims and urges readiness for war or peace talks through the United Nations or the State Department. Dworshak traveled to Idaho with Mrs. Dworshak and their son, Calvin.
Senator Dworshak, after visiting Berlin, commends Gen. Lucius D. Clay for his capable handling of America's policy in the postwar zone. He notes a firsthand view of Clay's efficiency and states plans to remain in Idaho about a week before returning to Washington for a special congressional session.
The Pioneer League game between Pocatello and Salt Lake was postponed due to rain. A doubleheader is scheduled for tonight.
Telegraphic circuit 34 bringing weather data to the weather bureau was disrupted Monday evening between 4 20 and 6 20 p m. Chief operator Wilford Hunt of the Union Pacific telegraph office said three wires were down at the Simplot crossing likely knocked out by a high truck. He noted lines are set to clear ordinary traffic at crossings.
Hagerstown Maryland reports a toy chemical set containing uranium ore, prompting warnings that the Russians might misuse such items. Porter Chemical Co Vice President M. M. Hansen questions the toy’s appeal to Russia and notes a suspicious Finland order that was declined. Continued on Page Two.

Life magazine sent Hank Hyde of Klamath Falls to cover a three day Pocatello Frontier rodeo. The photographer with ten years rodeo experience followed a Brahma bull as Clown Wilbur Plaugher and Bullfighter Gene Clark tried to guide it. Hyde noted he can often predict animal moves and works on an assignment basis after earning a Life Picture of the Week.
Sixteen U S Air Force F-80 jet planes landed at Keflavik airport near Reykjavik on a two hour flight from Greenland. The Shooting Stars are making the pioneer trans Atlantic flight by jet planes and flew here from an air force base on Greenland s east coast. They are scheduled to leave early Tuesday for Odiham Field near London, with a refueling stop in Scotland. The trans Atlantic hop began in Detroit and will end in Germany.
Cairo dispatch reports Israel charging Syria with truce violations after a United Nations mediation order. Israeli spokesmen warn of liberty to attack Syrian forces, as Jews fight on fronts near Galilee and Jenin amid reports of Iraqi artillery and clashes at Zir'in Lajjun and Mishmar Hay Yarden. No food water or road arrangements for Jerusalem yet.
Bradford B. Van Diver, 21, of Garden City New York, survived a 2000 foot fall from Longs Peak aided by climbing partner William Eubank, 20, of Kansas City. Eubank held the rope, dragged Van Diver to a rock ledge, and a five hour rescue brought him to Estes Park hospital for head injuries. Both youths reside in Boulder where Eubank is a University of Colorado junior.
Washington sources say Truman aides and top diplomats including John Foster Dulles and Sir Oliver Franks discussed the Berlin blockade. A decision on next moves against Moscow remains undecided as plans reportedly consider new notes to Moscow and possibly urgent measures with UN backing.
The Columbia Basin Inter Agency committee will meet in Bonners Ferry on July 2 to discuss flood control with the International Joint Commission. The Portland session of July 28 was postponed to July 29 to allow participation in the Bonners Ferry meeting, per State Reclamation Engineer Mark R. Kulp. Gov Robins invited the group to study Kootenai River flood control.
Funeral services are set for Max Russell Pierson of Aberdeen after he drowned Saturday in the Snake River below the American Falls dam while fishing. The body was recovered Sunday after an 18 hour search. he fell when landing a large fish, slipping on rocks. Coroner H L Davis of American County will oversee the investigation.
