Gov. Charles C. Gossett fired hospital superintendent Dr. G Rit ter Smith following a five member commission report on the Idaho mental hospital at Blackfoot. The panel condemned conditions and urged reforms including funding, new staff, and possible grand jury action if crimes against inmates are found.
Prosecuting Attorney Donald R. Good of Bingham county said he would act if facts justify investigation or prosecution regarding conditions at the state hospital for mental patients. Gov Gossett will send him the governor's commission report. Good noted past administrations also faced poor conditions and cited prior neglect charges against Dr. David A. McClusky without conviction.
Fire completely destroyed the Wenatchee plant of the Valley Evaporating company early this morning. The plant, with an apple drying capacity of 6000 boxes daily, suffered an estimated loss of $200,000, according to manager Harley H. Hallouer. Three carloads of sugar and about 100 tons of product were destroyed.

In Polk County Willamette Valley tracts 2 000 to 3 000 acres burn as crews fight to contain the blazes.
The National Herald urged Emperor Hirohito be proclaimed a war criminal and hanged by China and allies for Japan s aggression and atrocities. It argued Hirohito must be held responsible if he cannot disprove charges, and should be hanged with other war leaders.

Pvt Francis D. Haycock, 21, of Richfield Utah died when his motorcycle struck a utility pole on Wednesday. He served with the Timberwolf division in Germany Holland and France.
