Arthur Brooke a New York ticket agent known as The Man with the Rose vanished with more than 100000 dollars belonging to steamship firms. He advertised in hotels abroad and told arrivals to seek Liberty and the Rose on the pier while passing himself as ex British embassy staff. Officials say he sold bookings on top ships and his final checks bounced.
Omaha business leaders meeting under the Chamber of Commerce endorsed the buy wheat movement aiming to push grain prices higher. They propose ten member groups each buy at least 1000 bushels for cash, store them in warehouses with receipts, and recruit colleagues to join the chain.
Washington reports generally favorable crop conditions and good livestock health in the first half of July. Corn is late but growing rapidly with needed rains in some areas, while winter wheat harvests progress with good yields and quality overall.

Denver July 19 AP Actual work on the Moffat tunnel through the continental divide west of Denver is set to begin August 1. The 6.04 mile main tunnel and paralleling pioneer tunnel will allow 173 miles of shortening on the Denver & Salt Lake route to Salt Lake City and reduce coastal distance by 79 miles. Electricity trains and auto crossings planned with elevations of 9190 feet east portal and 9100 feet west portal. The project ends a 50 year campaign and will alter longtime rail stops including Corona at 10660 feet.
The Erie Railroad was ruled liable for money damages to every employee who lost pay after the carrier cut wages for crossing watchmen flagmen and truck men. The decision cites violation of decision 147 of the U S railroad labor board and the transportation act. The work was contracted to Lincoln Engineering at 5 to 10 cents below prevailing rates.
Mrs Katherine Novane of Florence Italy arrived in New York with her 17 year old son Stefano aboard the Conte Rosse. The pair plan to enroll Stefano in an American college to keep him out of a troublesome family environment amid lingering past tensions and social upheavals in California and Italy.

Reports from Dresden describe German women students facing severe poverty. Bells toll as one student scraps by with piecemeal work while a donor fund covers two meals daily. Many cannot afford the two cent meal and fall ill.
Paris reports Berlin via London embassy pressing for an end to passive Ruhr resistance in return for French concessions. Berlin would withdraw troops to a skeletal presence and allow reinstatement of expelled officials, plus currency restoration, but Paris finds no guarantees on reparations and fears inequity in yielding to German demands.
The British cabinet met in London this morning to discuss the proposed reparations documents, including the draft reply to Germany and the accompanying note. By early afternoon uncertainty lingered over whether the documents would be forwarded to other governments, including the United States, that night.
San Diego July 19 AP reports a mock war exercise around San Francisco with a rush flight squadron and maintenance crews. The test will flash to North Island then proceed to disassemble, load on a navy transport, reassemble on barges in the bay and tow to shore for a camp to support operations.
In Coeur d Aiene Idaho on July 18 a pair of burglars tried for a Liberty theatre break in moving a 400 pound safe from the second floor through the theatre to a car. They abandoned the safe a block away and left with nothing._contents valued around 100 dollars were untouched.
Lieutenant R L Maughan completed the third leg of his ocean to ocean dawn to dusk flight arriving Cheyenne at 2 32 p m Mountain standard time. He had traversed 1680 miles, about 100 miles short of two thirds of the New York to San Francisco distance. An oil leak in his motor caused nausea and forced a pause in repairs, with exact repair time unknown at 2 55 p m.

Senator Brookhart returning from a Russia trip warned that without an extra session of Congress called by President Harding, independents will shift control of committees away from Republicans at the December regular session. He said the president must act now to organize legislative action to help farmers.
Vienna July 19 AP reports the heir of Emperor Francis Joseph, Coust Qe Seéefried, a grandchild of the late monarch, joins the mercantile world as manager of the B branch of an Austrian bank.
