Tokio dispatch says terrain north of Mauka on Sakhalin Island hinders Russian retreat after defeat at Darline. Shortage of ammunition may force surrender as the Russians hold a stand in the area.
Helena Montana July report details the divorce of Julius Hirschberg and Mixa Dora Greenhood. The couple wed June 11 in Seattle and separated after she alleged cruelty when Hirschberg struck her during their honeymoon. The case, heard in chambers, drew mild public interest.
Elihu Root was sworn in as Secretary of State today by William McNear the assistant librarian of the State Department. Root plans to return to New York tonight.
Five miners sheltering in a powder house at the West Riverside Coal mine near Des Moines were killed when lightning struck dynamite and exploded two kegs of powder. The blast shattered the building and hurled body parts up to 500 feet. Work crews only learned of the accident later that morning.

Rome reports the former Marquis Francis MacNutt once papal chamberlain of the Cloak and Sword was condemned to three months' imprisonment with provisory liberty after being found guilty of disorderly conduct. The wealthy American was deprived of his title and office.
A Mecca bulletin states the grand Sheref of Mecca has died. The notice cites the Almanach de Gotha naming Sheeref Avn Ur Retik Pasha as emir.

E H Funston former congressman and father of General Frederick Funston was found guilty in Lola Kansas police court of disturbing the peace and carrying concealed weapons after the dynamiting of three saloons. He was fined five dollars on each charge plus costs and appealed to the Superior Court amid accusations he drew a weapon during an altercation with a policeman.
Alfred Buck former cashier of the Mapleton State Bank Mapleton Minnesota who vanished six months ago with sixty thousand dollars of the bank's funds was arrested on the Isle of Pines and will be brought back for extradition. He is the son of a former Minnesota Supreme Court justice.
Cripple Creek Colorado July 19 six assayers in this district have been arrested on charges of receiving stolen high grade ores. Books in one assayer's office show thirty thousand dollars profit in six months. Other records suggest over a million dollars of ore stolen yearly and sold to assay offices.
Portland July 19 The jury in the subordination of perjury case against Congressmen Williams and Biggs Gesner remains out at one o'clock unable to agree. Eleven jurors favor conviction while one holds for acquittal. The jury entered court at noon seeking further instructions.
Paul Dion of Portland shot his sweetheart Nellie Mott at her Seattle home and then stabbed himself three times in the throat. Both survived with non serious wounds after police found them. Dion had sought to marry Mott, who refused him. He fired four times, only one hit, then injured himself.
Movcow July 18 authorities banned the Zemetoy congress but it opened at midday in the residence of Prince Dolgorukot. The event proceeds despite the prohibition and reflects rising political tensions in the city.
The Blackfoot Idaho Sugar plant formerly of Snake River Valley Sugar Co. is purchased by Thomas R. Cutler for Idaho Sugar Co. The deal creates three main factories in the Snake River Valley with 1,790 tons beet capacity daily and a projected beet area over 21,000 acres. Cutler plans expansion and a railroad spur to distant beet districts.
In Spokane Judge Poindexter ruled that marriages contracted within four months after a Washington divorce are void even if performed out of state. The decision affects Olle Revett and James Devett as cases cited. such weddings may face criminal prosecution.
President Roosevelt and his sons were at a camp on the lakeshore near Sagamore Hill. Early morning travel back to Sagamore Hill followed a previous night spent with companions on the water, returning by midmorning.
