Headquarters of a Bothwell for Senator club opened in the Perrine hotel building Twin Falls. The group named former District Judge James R. Bothwell as candidate for the Democratic nomination for United States Senate with T. M. Robertson as chairman and Tom F. Alworth as secretary.
Probate Judge R S Callis faced resignation pressure from county commissioners over rumors of a funds shortage. Ruth Moon will audit the books and report back before further action. Callis did not file as a Democratic candidate for the August 13 primary for probate judge.

Secretary Ickes appoints Sinclair O Harper as chief engineer of the bureau of reclamation succeeding the late Raymond S Walter. Harper, assistant chief engineer in Denver since 1930, has served the bureau for 33 years and was acting engineer in Washington after Walters death on July 1.
An observer decries the Chicago Democratic national convention as a totalitarian display led by a dictatorial figure. The piece likens the event to fascist and communist parliaments, warns of four more years of mismanagement, and urges Democrats to resist the party leadership and its draft Roosevelt push.
Franklin D Roosevelt won renomination on the first ballot amid a raucous Chicago convention. Delegates backed his bid with 946 13 30 votes while four rivals totaled 149 1 15. Farley, Garner, Tydings and Hull trailed. The party adopted a pro New Deal platform and discussed a possible second-place choice for Roosevelt.
Delbert Luty 35 and his wife Hazel Jane 32 suffered minor injuries when the car left the road one mile east of McCammon traveling at high speed and rolled twice. Luty sustained severe shock and leg injuries while Hazel Jane had shock. They were en route from Columbus Ohio to Portland Oregon. Damage to the car was about 200 dollars.
The trial of Mrs Frances D Hardy charged with killing railroad official Charles E Hardy April 2 goes to an all male jury after a two hour defense summary and a rebuttal by Prosecutor C M Jeffery. Judge Isaac E McDougall instructed verdict options including first and second degree murder and manslaughter. Prosecution relied on circumstantial evidence from three telephone operators who heard a quarrel before the shooting. Defense argued Hardy may have shot herself and noted the husband’s despondency and drinking.
In Chicago July 18 1940 Henry A Wallace of Iowa widely circled as Vice Presidential candidate for the Roosevelt ticket amid delegate excitement at the Democratic convention. Wallace a former Republican and current Agriculture Secretary is noted for farm relief programs and New Deal leadership.
Senator John Thomas announces a swing through Idaho during the congressional recess. He will attend the Dairymen's Cooperative Creamery picnic in Caldwell, then travel by plane to Washington. He plans speaking stops in Twin Falls, Pocatello, Idaho Falls, and Boise.
A marriage license on file today lists Horres Johnston, 39, Hamer Ida, and Mabel Swi hart, Pred ericktown Ohio, as the marrying couple.
