In Prague the Communist party declared a no quarter campaign to dismantle church influence, aiming to liquidate the church order rather than erase it entirely. The manifesto targets Catholic leadership, with ministers listed among officials, and vows no compromise in the clash with Roman Catholic authority.
The Army suspended Maj Gen Herman Feldman and Maj Gen Alden Waitt amid Senate committee findings on influence in Army contract awards. Secretary Gordon Gray announced that evidence shows General Waitt improperly shared personnel data with a civilian, and General Feldman supplied procurement information to a contractor’s representative.

Harold Rhoades, formerly of Riggins, was killed yesterday at a tam arack mill 40 miles south of here when a flying board struck him. He suffered a fractured skull. Ida Riggins reported the incident.

President Truman travels to Chicago for two Shrine speeches during the six day diamond jubilee of the Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. An estimated 50 000 to 60 000 delegates will hear a 20 minute public address at Soldier Field and a later dinner speech. The Soldier Field talk will be broadcast by Mutual and ABC. Harold Lloyd will be installed as imperial potentate. The public will hear the secret Shrine ritual for the first time.
A strong dust storm broke a week long heat wave in Coeur d'Alene Idaho ending the spell of 102 degree heat that matched the citys record for the period a heat peak last set July 14 1947 with the same temperature reported.
Senate investigators heard that the State Department repeatedly overruled its visa division and admitted foreign officials whose entry was questioned on security grounds. Herve J. L Heureux, chief of the visa division, testified he had overruled concerns and admitted officials despite security doubts.
Alexander Fell Whitney, 76, longtime head of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and noted rival and ally of US presidents, died of a heart attack at his Bay Village home after a day at the office and an evening with friends. He supported Franklin D. Roosevelt's policies and served on several national committees.

National Beet Growers federation delegates report sugar beet production down in 17 of 19 western states with two states holding steady. President Arvil Millar says a program is sought to restore 1950 output and a committee will present testimony at the November 18 consumptive estimate hearing in Washington DC. Members include William Carson, E J Holmgren, John Helser, Orvil Andrews, Richard Blake and Millar.
Senators urge larger cuts to the military program after a 1.01 billion slash by the appropriations committee. Ferguson of Michigan vows to seek an additional 821 million reduction, while Thomas of Oklahoma proposes saving another 600 million. The 15.9 billion total, approved by the house, would be weakened further by the committee’s 799 million air force cut.
A federal housing push signals Pocatello will seek federal aid for slum clearance and low rent housing. An AP survey shows 61 cities in states with laws plan about 256000 units, while Pocatello estimates a postwar need around 300 units pending a community survey.
Col Harwood Steele of Toronto is in Pocatello at the invitation of Mayor Halsey to gather historical material for his forthcoming novel Ghosts Returning. He highlights Craters of the Moon, Bannock County Sheriff as hero, RCMP and U S officers cooperation, with publication planned by Ryerson Press in February 1950. They will visit Fort Hall Indians and Craters of the Moon, then proceed to Salt Lake City and southern Utah before returning to Canada.
