In July 17 AP report, the US recovery from 1937-38 slump shows industry output at or near record highs. Consumption of gasoline rayon and aircraft soars while electricity use and residential construction reach post 1929 peaks. Shipbuilding and retail sales also rise amid uneven progress and Europe uncertainty.
The 1939 United States grain crop is valued at over 2.0 billion dollars by trade statisticians. total harvest projected at about 4.453 billion bushels with corn oats and wheat as main components. 1939 production will be about 400 million bushels below 1938 and 500 million below 1937, yet similar to other recent years.
In the House of Commons Prime Minister Chamberlain said Britain would not reverse its Far East policy under any external pressure. He noted Tokyo had not issued formal demands and cited Britain's ambassador in Tokyo who described Japan’s stance as asking Britain to view Sino-Japanese hostilities with more understanding. He added conditions at Tientsin have improved with food and milk supplies entering concessions.
Baltimore July 17 police investigated a river plunge at the drawbridge after two young waitresses Miss Lucy Morrell 22 and Mrs Charlotte Elliott 24 fell about 60 feet into the Patapsco River. They were rescued by a cabin cruiser and brought to a hospital unconscious. witness Benjamin Smith said he saw them climb over the railing in full view of hundreds of motorists.
Victor E. Carson of Grandview died at a Boise hospital from injuries after his car was sideswiped by a truck last Wednesday. His left arm was mangled and amputated. complications led to his death, doctors reported.
Street drivers are warned about severe pavement buckling in the 1200 to 1300 block of South Fifth Street causing a dangerous pitch.
Los Angeles reports that evangelist Joseph Jeffers and his wife Zella Joy were acquitted by a superior court jury after 11 hours of deliberation on four morals charges. The couple resumed duties at Kingdom Church and Jeffers delivered a sermon.
In Danville Illinois 16 year old Alta Heath shot and killed her father Andrew Heath 39 a brickyard worker after he returned home drunk and allegedly abused the children. Police Lt Leo Bireline said the girl confessed firing the fatal blast and cited a two week old peace bond at the wife Mildreds request.
Lancaster police broke into the Eckenrode home last night and seized 16 year old Henry Eckenrode after he threatened for an hour to jump from a 40 foot balcony roof. Lieut Crawford said the parents said they had reprimanded him for breaking a diet to go on an ice cream spree.
Five members of the Floyd Remington family and their relatives died in a collision between an automobile and a truck in Kalamazoo Michigan. The victims were Mr and Mrs Floyd Remington their son and daughter in law Mr and Mrs Gerald Remington and Roberta Kurtz the 21 month old granddaughter.
District Judge I E McDougall grants a decree of divorce to A F Shartel in a suit against Emma D Shartel. They were married May 2 1803 and have a son born August 24 1910. Plaintiff says she deserted him in November 1920.
Sheriff M J Rossiter reports J B Britt Hargraves Jr. improved after shooting himself while cornered in a dormitory at Idaho University. Hargraves is charged with first degree murder in the Hunter slaying and is under heavy guard with leg irons and handcuffs. Chief Detective Nelson and four officers were wounded in the exchange, with two remaining in hospital.
Anna A. Bistline sues New York Life Insurance in probate case. Defendant files district court appeal from June 7 1939 judgment granting plaintiff $382.73. Court action notes appeal filed in district court asserting challenge to probate ruling.
Salvage workers laid two new cables beneath the forward keel of the British submarine Thetis, which sank off Liverpool on June 1 with 99 lives lost, as they prepare to attach lifting wires and lift the sub.
In New York on July 17 a 60-year-old groom Camelo Locapira wed a 16-year-old bride after a chaotic scene. A stone shattered a third-floor window as police and fire crews contained a 100-strong crowd. The ceremony resumed after locals argued over the unlikely match and a rival relative forced the couple into refuge at the altar.

East Merrill K. Gee son of De County Assessor W. E. Ger Gee left for Washington D C after visiting here with his parents. He will study law at George Washington University.
In Phoenix the prosecution urged a death sentence for Robert Burgunder, 22, for the premeditated killings of two auto salesmen on a desert site. Prosecutor Leslie Hardy detailed four acts linking premeditation, while Burgunder sat flanked by his father and lawyer.
A national cool front from Idaho and Montana brings Utah relief from a week of heat. Salt Lake City tops near 80 today with readings dropping 20 degrees from Saturday’s 103.1. Idaho delegates head to San Francisco for Idaho day events on July 22. Governor Bottolfsen and state leaders travel from Spokane and Pocatello with California officials. Highlights include a 11 am salute at Treasure Island, troop inspection, a welcome at the federal building, Idaho motion pictures, and a 7 pm dinner dance at Yerba Buena Club.
Five people were killed and about 150 injured when two excursion trains collided head on near Warsaw. The engine of one train exploded, igniting the wreckage and hindering rescue efforts.

Returned missionary Ralph Stevenson will address the Lions' International club at 6:30 PM tonight on the topic Holland. Mal Deaton announced Stevenson’s engagement for the regular dinner meeting.

Police were notified that Willie Smith a hotel janitor was wounded in a confrontation with Willie Price after an argument over a Wednesday shooting incident Price fired several times and struck Smith on the head with the gun Smith received two scalp wounds and was transported to General hospital Price, described as about 30, had been washing cars in the wholesale district and remained at large.
County Judge William O Dwyer sentenced Stewart Wallace 59 to 30 years for participation in the 427000 Rubel armored car robbery of 1934. Thomas Quinn 40 and Joseph Karasick 32 drew 10 to 30 year terms each. Wallace already serves 3 to 60 years for bank robbery.
A cold air mass from the northwest lowers Pocatello's high to a July low of 78 at 2 30 p m with a 54 night low and a mean of 66 six degrees below normal. The high yesterday was 82. Forecast calls for little temperature change as residents prepare with coal supplies and winter wear.
