Hoover completes two day visit with President Coolidge at the Cedar Belong lodge and heads to Duluth then Palo Alto for his official nomination ceremonies next month.
Izvestia publishes interview with survivor Behounek claiming Finn Malmgren mismanaged the Italia flight. Behounek says the crew overworked and slept little, and notes ballast release during descent. Rescue vessel Krassin continues search as plans for Amundsen party rescue unfold.
Governor Smith defers campaign detail to a New York City group led by John J. Raskob and Herbert Lehman. The advisory committee includes Senator Gerry of Rhode Island and Nellie Tayles Ross, with Mrs. Ross heading the women’s division. Raskob is expected to announce dates for nominations as the governor keeps plans private.
Senator William E Borah addressed thousands of farmers at Caldwell praising the three year old dairymen cooperative creamery celebration. He urged revising duties on agricultural products to protect home production and reduce foreign competition noting last year’s 82 5 billion in food imports. He criticized the marketing system as ruinous to farmers and urged government action.
In Pottsville Pa on July 17 a frightened youth fainted while gripping a rattlesnake. He was not bitten. A Minersville doctor and two men attempted to aid him but the snake died. The boy was taken to a Pottsville hospital for examination.
In a series of games, Washington defeated St. Louis 6 to 0 as Stewart and Schang and Braxton and Ruel led. New York beat Cleveland 4 to 2 with Uhle and Sewell on the mound. Boston beat Chicago 9 to 6 with Adkins and MacPayden powering the offense. Philadelphia topped Detroit 6 to 2 as Grove and Cochrane helped secure the win.

Mexico City July 17 General Alvaro Obregon president elect of Mexico was assassinated at a banquet near Mexico City shortly after 2 PM The unidentified assassin was arrested Obregon was shot five times and taken to his home guarded by soldiers as crowds gathered Officials reported uncertainty over his survival while local papers claimed he was dead The banquet site was in San Angel twelve miles south of the capital and the assailant known as Juan was jailed President Calles was notified and prepared to act Obregon had recently returned from Sonora and had spoken of a possible US trip before November 1.
Harry K. Thaw arrived in New York from Paris aboard the Ile De France and criticized British home secretary Sir William Johnson-Hicks for barring him from England. He called the action a violation of Magna Carta principles and traveled home separated from others on the ship.
Four teens pled guilty after a stalled jury selection in a Pearl Eggleston holdup murder case. Prosecutors had balked at death penalty amid a drawn out trial. court warned sentences could include death or imprisonment. The youths identified were Stanley Burma 29, Stanley Thomas 19, Albert Mas 21, and John Toec 22, and the state sought the electric chair. Trial to resume Thursday.
The New York Socialist party asks Governor Smith to investigate Mayor Walker citing municipal misrule and corruption. They allege sewer graft in Queens, payroll padding in street cleaning, city supply monopolies, and 2300,000 spent on greeting guests. They accuse Walker of shad ow boxing and as absent from city duties while court-visit parties.
An outbreak of suspected food poisoning tied to chocolate cream pie affects more than 200 people in Greater Boston. About 75 hospitalizations span Somerville Boston and Medford with many treated and released. Ford plant in Somerville halts work as cases rise. Washington July 17 Secretary Kellogg’s proposed treaty for renunciation of war won approval from four of fourteen invited signatories. Officials anticipate a London note replying to Kellogg’s June 23 communication, signaling Britain’s likely endorsement and paving the way for the pact’s next step. Kellogg expressed gratification at favorable replies and progress toward an Anglo American peace framework.
