Geneva July 16 AP report says Britain must answer London on how far it will reduce cruiser tonnage. Americans and Japanese press for lower totals, while all delegates fear breakdown within days. Debate centers on cruiser size and gun limits as talks seek a workable basis.
The first two people to meet Colonel Lindbergh on his arrival in America were women. The first was his mother, and the second is Edith Nourse Rogers, the first New England woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Washington reports the treasury faces obstacles in moving prohibition enforcement onto a civil service basis by October 1. Lack of funds and overdue appropriations hinder exams, list compilation, and transfer of enforcement activities to civil service, delaying appointments and agent work.
President Coolidge attended a farmers picnic in Ardmore where Governor Bulow of South Dakota urged tariff revision to aid agriculture and Senator Norbeck of South Dakota challenged the tariff as antagonistic to farmers. Boise July 16 The Idaho Supreme Court affirms the Twin Falls district court ruling on claims tied to a defunct bank. To impose a trust on bank property in a receiver’s hands the claimant must trace funds into the receiver. The case involves I W Porter commissioner of finance and the Citizens State Bank of Buhl failure. The National Bank of the Republic of Salt Lake City challenged the classification of claims for drafts.
Boise July 16 two highway contracts were awarded. William Hoops of Mount Pleasant Utah won surfacing a 21.33 mile stretch of the Lost River highway from Arco to the Bingham county line. Western Construction Co of Dillon Montana received the grade and drainage job on 2.2 miles of the Sawtooth park highway north of Challis. Completion dates set for October 15 and early next spring with costs of 516669 and 21175 respectively.
Governor H. C. Baldridge visited his home town Parma Idaho for the annual Parma picnic. The informal gathering drew farmers, business leaders and railroad men to mingle and learn about state programs. Attending were John J. Weber commissioner of agriculture Pred Tike of the state insurance fund and M. L. Dean director of plant industries.
A gaudy totem pole sits in the Kansas State Treasury near State Treasurer Carl R. White as the ceiling proves too low for display. Purchased from Alaska Indians at the request of the Kansas State Historical Society, the traveler who funded it awaits a $300 refund until the 929 legislative session authorizes an appropriation.

Ernest L. Smith and Eberg B. Bronte, trans oceanic fliers, sent SOS calls then stopped them, causing worry before their radio failed at a critical moment. Their vessel City of Oakland landed on Molokai after a fuel pump issue and antenna loss, with only salvageable motor and instruments.
The state game department announced open seasons for sagehens native or blue grouse and sharp-tail grouse from August 1 to 15 in 27 southern Idaho counties. In Oakland California on July 16 1928 Dr David Leigh Colvin national chairman of the Prohibition party named Senator William Borah and William Gibbs McAdoo as likely presidential candidates if major parties fail to uphold bone dry laws. He said the party would nominate either McAdoo or Borah as standard bearer. The talk noted current support for a nonpartisan coalition was unlikely.
Governor Dan Moody, age 33, is praised for firm leadership despite youth. His tenure as attorney general saw highway contract suits yield about $600,000 for the state, and as Texas governor his energetic approach is contrasted with his age.
D. J. O'Mahoney owner announces lease and bond transferring the Red Prince to a group led by H. S. Thayer of Colorado. A $40,000 two year deal gives O'Mahoney a 15 percent royalty and employment at the mine while exploration and trenching begin to assess commercial value.
A series of tornadoes swept through Kansas into the southern edge of Kansas City killing at least eight people and injuring about 100. In South Park Kan many homes were leveled with four dead and 75 homes destroyed. several other fatalities occurred near Lebo and Burlingame. Dozens of buildings were damaged or demolished as crops and livestock suffered losses and several residents were hospitalized.
Three persons escaped with minor injuries after an airplane crashed at Twin Falls while attempting an emergency landing at about 200 feet altitude. Pilot Dan B. Richardson and passengers Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Clark of Wells Nev were treated for cuts and bruises after being freed from wreckage.
Jack Dempsey will suspend boxing until he fights Jack Sharkey at Yankee Stadium next Thursday night. He traveled with trainer Jerry Livadas to Bennington Vermont for dinner then returns to camp for road work and light training as Leo Flynn outlined the comeback plan. Rumors say Dempsey may stage secret workouts during the final days before departure to New York. Ogden AP reports another item: a Weber County search ends with the detention of a sheepherder Ray Bates who is unbalanced and not the coalville kidnapper in Ellis Richins case.
