A near-capacity 5200 crowd in Idaho watches Arizona cowboy Claude Henson bulldog steer in 4.2 seconds at the seventh annual Frontier rodeo opener. Henson leads top cowboys from 13 western states in a three day event with a $3225 purse.
The Senate will vote next Thursday on ratifying the North Atlantic Security Treaty. Opponents blocked earlier unanimous consent aiming to widen resistance to the 12-nation alliance. A two thirds majority is required. House action is not needed unless an armament program follows.
A French army depot exploded Friday night near Pruem Germany killing 12 German soldiers and injuring scores. The blast destroyed the northern part of the town, left hundreds homeless, and authorities warned the toll could rise. The depot, in a former air raid shelter near the German Belgian Luxembourg frontier, was not deemed sabotage.
The justice department probes twenty or more foreigners connected to United Nations headquarters in New York City for possible espionage and intelligence activities Attorney General Clark revealed on Friday.
Secretary Sawyer announced a Truman era program to combat pockets of unemployment by directing federal spending. He said his department will conduct on the spot fact finding across the country to set the program in motion and meet key officials.
Irving J. Polack a veteran showman and circus owner died Wednesday at his Van Nuys home at age 63. The brief wire item notes his death and identifies him as a longtime circus figure.
Boise tied its July 15 record as the weather bureau logged 104 degrees, the highest since the office moved to the airport in 1940. Other Idaho towns posted heat readings from 91 to 102, with a cooler but unsettled outlook forecast for the region.
In Atlanta a flaming cross was lit in a yard and four bullets hit a residence housing two young lawyers who had filed an in junction suit against the Ku Klux Klan. Half a dozen witnesses described the incident to reporters as the lawyers sought court protection.
Legislation introduced by Rep. Baring aims to assure production of strategic metals from marginal domestic mines for stockpiling. The plan would use five year contracts with U S producers and allow monthly price adjustments to cover costs plus a profit.
New York City's taxi and transit system faced a major strike as the Transport Workers Union threatened to shut off service for 1.8 million riders. The walkout halted two large private bus companies, Omnibus and Fifth Avenue, with 1,080 buses on 30 routes, while Third Avenue Transit carried about 1.8 million daily. Subways increased schedules as union demands include a 2 cent hourly wage boost, a shorter 40 hour week with no pay cut, and better pensions.
In Spokane the Washington state federation of labor endorsed in principle the proposed Columbia Valley administration. A resolution favoring a CVA was adopted at the federation's 47th annual convention, directing officers and affiliated councils to analyze labor provisions of legislation to create a CVA. The group had previously endorsed the CVA in 1946.

Spokane report: mill worker Van B Warren found a bank envelope with 16 thousand one hundred dollars in a safety deposit booth. The money belonged to William Sandrock of Potlatch Idaho, traced as his life savings after Warren returned it to the bank.
A British jury acquitted Edward Clarke, a 35 year old truck driver, of raping his wife Mary Clarke after a two day trial. Prosecution argued a magistrate order forced separation due to cruelty and Clarke lured Mrs Clarke to a secluded spot on March 12 and assaulted her while she allegedly struggled. Clarke testified he made love with consent.
Film star Greer Garson and Col. EB Fogelson a wealthy Texas rancher and sportsman wed today in Santa Fe. Justice James B. McGhee officiated at Fletcher Catron's home with attendees Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. O'Donnell of Dallas.
President Truman signed the long range housing bill into law and urged rapid implementation. The plan includes 810,000 publicly owned low rent units over six years a five year slum clearance program and a 325 million farm housing program. He asked Congress for funds this year and directed housing and agriculture officials to move quickly with local authorities.
Idaho Attorney General Robert E. Smylie recommends changes to the potato grading and packing act to strengthen its application. He urges penalties of 500 to 1,000 dollars or up to one year and a day in prison and calls for cull potatoes to be kept out of human food channels after two Twin Falls case dismissals.
Fae Elaine Bailey six died in a local hospital after a short illness. Born May ten 1943 in Pocatello she was the daughter of Leland F and Dottie Fae Bird Bailey. Survived by parents a sister Leola Bailey a brother Gene LeRoy Bailey and grandparents Lorenzo H Bailey of Pocatello and Henry Bird of Utah. Funeral services will be announced later. Friends may call at Arthur W Hall funeral home.
The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen called a strike against Southern Pacific in seven western states, set to start at 6 p.m. July 22. The action follows a dispute over proper crew makeup in road and yard service across Pacific lines in Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
