Secretary Byrnes reports from the Paris foreign ministers conference that no progress was made on Germany. He notes Soviet aloofness and hostility to Americas demilitarization offer, raising doubts among nations seeking friendship. Continued on Page Seven.
Utah's traffic death toll for 1946 climbed to 95 as Frederick Gulbranson 25 of San Diego died in a Salt Lake City hospital from spinal injuries after a Friday collision near Heber. The crash involved a car driven by a hitchhiking soldier and a truck operated by Lloyd Reed of Davenport Iowa. Mrs Gulbranson and their 11 month old son, plus Roland Reed 12, were injured.
An American military court in DACHAU, Germany, sentenced 43 German officers and soldiers to death for the massacre of about 900 people during the Ardennes offensive in December 1944. Col. Joachim Peiper received the death sentence. Dietrich and Priess were given life and 20 years respectively. others got 10 to life, with 750 American prisoners and 150 Belgian civilians killed.
Secretary of State Byrnes warned of an open split with the Soviet Union as the U.S. moves to compel economic unification of Germany. Orders will go to General McNary this week demanding cooperation with Britain, France and Russia on finance transport communication trade and industry.
Gellman testified Garsson backed claims of winning munitions orders with a large advance contract and a favorable letter from the Chemical Warfare Service. He denied Garsson’s son claimed Washington influence. Ferguson pressed wartime earnings and net worth figures, while Gellman said current value depends on postwar renegotiation.
President Truman announced a 750 million British loan to revive and expand international trade. He said the measure serves U S interests by restoring world trade and helps Britain cooperate in creating mutually beneficial economic relations. He stressed the open system of trade and denied that the agreement targets any nation.
Churchill urged Europe to rise from ruins and build a strong France to avert a third holocaust during a Metz Bastille Day event marking the French revolution’s 157th anniversary. Bidault in Paris thanked the U S for liberation and called France and America old friends despite quarrels. Sgt. Kenneth Ralph Beers, son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Beers of 240 Rosewood, returns home Monday after honorable discharge in San Francisco on July 13 1946. First visit home in 27 months. He enlisted March 20 1944 and served as construction chief with the Marines, credited with service in Hawaii and Eniwetok Marshall Islands.
In Berlin, Russia handed over a missing American warrant officer and his wife to U S army authorities. Shortly after, three Russian espionage suspects were released to the Red Army. The civilians claimed to be Red Army officers and had been arrested in the U S zone two weeks earlier. Continued on Page Seven.
Four Nevills boats start from Salmon Idaho on a 275 mile journey down the Salmon river known as the River of No Return. Norman D. Nevills leads a party including two women and several river veterans toward Lewiston arriving August 2 with plans to continue to Weiser and on to Hell's Canyon.
Mr and Mrs Garth Brush report escalating egg oddities from their New Hampshire Red pullet. The hen laid a pint sized eye sized egg, then a three inch egg, followed by a nine and a quarter inch circumference egg, with another egg inside the bed.
Robert Cason, 28, told police he believed brakes failed and he leaped from his car toward a cliff edge. The incident started as a dream sequence and escalated into a real danger before authorities intervened.
State's Atty. Tuohy says George Subrowski identified William Heirens as the man seen with a paper bag near the Degnan home shortly after Suzanne Degnan was kidnapped. Heirens, a 17 year old University of Chicago student, faces 29 charges as the case unfolds. FBI fingerprint and palm print analysis match Heirens to the Degnan kidnapping note.
Frank Adamson said his Buick sedan license 1B-5236 was stolen near the Shamrock club south of Pocatello at 12:50 a.m. after three men took him along. He was struck and knocked out near the Shamrock club. The car was found abandoned at Inkom. a suspect was held at McCammon but later released.
Chicago AP bulletin reports cattle at 25.75 per hundredweight hogs at 20.90 and sheep at 21.50 for spring lambs with slaughter ewes at 11.00. Receipts slackened while demand surged and red steers set another record high as hogs surpassed all levels since 1919 and sheep climbed beyond 1918 highs.
The Associated Press reports Burton K. Wheeler predicts victory in Montana Democratic renomination as a tight ballot battle unfolds. President Truman wrote Wheeler a letter to curb a smear campaign while Leif Erickson gains backing from James Roosevelt amid an estimated 125000 voters.
A Canadian royal commission report says Soviet agents may still operate in Canada and had sent uranium samples to Russia. It notes British scientist Alan Nunn May gave uranium 235 and 233 to a Russian aide in Ottawa, with material flown to Moscow. The commission warns of compromised radar, fuse wiring, submarine detection, propellants and explosives data, while saying spies faced obstacles in getting full atomic details.
Nine days after Hughes’s experimental photo reconnaissance plane crashed on its maiden Beverly Hills flight, he shows improvement. Doctors report Hughes’s pulse around 120, temperature near 1091, and white blood count at 16 000. A late night blood transfusion aided his moderate anemia. The pilot suffered nine rib fractures a collapsed left lung and severe burns.
Gov Arnold Williams led a preliminary Boise meeting to form an Idaho state social protection board to cooperate with the federal government in eradicating veneraeal diseases. A follow up with Edwin James Cooley of the Federal Security agency is planned for the first week in August to fill gaps after the army withdrew from its local social health protection program.
Idaho Advertising Commission launches a push to boost early Idaho potatoes sales in the south and midwest. The campaign begins August 1 with plans to expand in fall as pud crop size assesses. commissioners named include Weitz Caldwell Peckham Wilder Longzeteig Craigmont Marshall Twin Falls Marquess Paul Westfall Aberdeen Cook Idaho Falls Pettycove Boise.
