Providence Kentucky July 15 Kentucky mine inspector Pi John Daniels feared the death toll from a mine gas explosion would reach 28 as hope dwindled for nine men still buried 200 to 250 feet underground. Earlier 19 miners were reported dead. He cited heavy carbon monoxide gas making rescue unlikely.
Jefferson City Missouri July 15 The state health department reports the feared Rocky Mountain spotted fever has reached Missouri while precautions are stepped up The health commissioner says at present there is no alarm but officials will watch for spread and inspect ticks for carriers The department notes one case this year and four in 1938 in river counties along the Mississippi River
Lake City Bees outlasted the Redbirds 9 to 7 in 13 innings to notch the longest game of the season. Myers led off the 13th with a double, RBI by Trowers, Larrieu doubled for two runs, Burleson scored on a miscue, and Robello, who homered earlier, added a key hit to seal the win for Salt Lake at Pocatello. Final: Salt Lake 9, Pocatello 7.
In Phoenix on July 15 the Robert Burgunder murder trial nears verdict as prosecutors and defense conclude closing arguments. Jurors must now decide the fate of the 22 year old former college sophomore charged with killing two auto salesmen. Judge La Prade said final instructions will take a full day.
Cap ital police report 20 000 visitors recorded at Idaho state house during June. Tourists from 28 states and 40 of Idaho's 44 counties visited the Capitol dome, reflecting strong summer attendance.

Carl G Fisher pioneer developer of Miami Beach and promoter of the Indianapolis motor speedway died at 69 from gastric hemorrhages. He built Miami Beach from mangroves into a major resort and founded Prest-O-Lite Co. He also developed Montauk Point and held the two mile auto record in 1904. He organized the Indianapolis motor speedway as a proving ground.
Ashland Kentucky Senator Styles Bridges told young Republican clubs Roosevelt and Perkins sought to bring John L. Lewis back into the AFL to bore from within He called Lewis part of the New Deal and said the effort to wreck the Federation and replace it with the CIO is now virtually bankrupt.
About 300 cars of perishable products move daily through Ogden to eastern points per United Pacific Express officials. The first of an expected 40 cars of green peas grown near Cedar City moved this week along with the first Weber County potato crop.

Boise July 15. In the first half of 1939 sparsely populated Poise county recorded one death, driving its per capita rate high. Canyon, Twin Falls, Ada, Bingham, and Pannock counties also posted notable death counts and rates, with Bonneville the sole county over 10,000 without fatal crashes. The state average was 13.71 per 100 000.
Ahepa Pocatello chapter 238 holds a 10 am picnic at Lava Hot Springs to honor new members. Nicholas Strike of Salt Lake City supreme vice president of the Sons of Pericles will speak, with William Gochis attending. Committee includes Jim Monroe Sam Lambrou Gust Contos. George Sakelaris leads local chapter.
President Roosevelt and cabinet members will visit Treasure Island soon after Congress adjourns. Leland Cutler, president of the Golden Gate Exposition, said the president plans to spend one day and an evening at the western world’s fair before sailing to Alaska.
WINONA Minn July 15 A 22 month old girl Ann Louise Cady was run over by a freight train late Friday and escaped unscathed. Trainmen said she threw herself face down between the tracks when she heard the whistle as she played near home. The engine and several cars passed over her before the train could be stopped but she did not cry.
J C Gunning Union Pacific general foreman said before vacation that skilled railroad labor is nearly exhausted. Due to the rush of business it might be necessary to hire even more workers during the fall peak.
Washington forecast adjournment as neutrality legislation fades and the lending program could be shelved until next winter. A Senate veteran suggested about two weeks more, with fate tied to administration moves, possibly extending the session into Thanksgiving or Christmas if fighting neutrality continues.
Twin Falls defeated Boise 7 to 5 before 2,500 at Airway Park as Wes Schulmerich and George Farrell powered the win. Schulmerich hit a homer with the bases loaded in the 11th and Farrell drove in a run in the seventh to seal the game. Jack Gertsenberg started for Boise but was lifted after 11 walks as Larry Reno finished.
In Chicago on July 15 Mrs. Bertha Suchy described a mounting pet problem to Judge John F. Bolton. Her husband John brought home two pigeons and two rabbits and the numbers grew to 250 rabbits and 20 pigeons haunting the attic. The judge granted her oil and awarded alimony.
Highfield 36 a former Commercial Security bank teller appeared before U S Commissioner John A Snedden for a preliminary hearing on a charge of making false entries. He posted 5000 bail and the hearing was set for August 2. Deputy U S Marshal Alf Gunn arrested him. Complaint by C H Olson of the FBI cites fraudulent railroad deposits dated June 30 instead of June 1 and 6.
Kingston report confirms the death of Mrs Auguste Seidl widow of conductor Anton Seidl and a Metropolitan Opera star of the era. The obituary notes her prominence in 1800s opera and her lasting influence on the stage and Chicago/New York circuits.

Ogden reports a surge of railroad tourists choosing America first as war clouds deter travel in Europe. Ray mond Smith, Ogden pullman agent, cites Alsace Lorraine visitors saying travel on the continent is too risky. During the week a group of 25 from Brazil and 15 from Australia passed through Ogden.
At the funeral of Acting Police Inspector John J. Creeden in Philadelphia Edwin Gale, a convict at the eastern state penitentiary, sent a floral tribute. The inscription read to one of the finest detectives in the world, reflecting Creeden’s role in Gale’s imprisonment in 183%.
