Henry Ford faces cross examination in a $1,000,000 libel suit against the Chicago Daily Tribune. He calls himself an ignorant idealist, then retracts, while the lawyer probes his views on preparedness, treason, and words used by his secretary. In naval news a Pacific fleet of 175 ships with 600000 tons sails from Hampton Roads led by dreadnoughts New Mexico and Idaho as part of a wartime buildup.
Berlin reports a sharp fall in food prices as the blockade ends. Illicit dealers unload hidden stocks causing a panic and a flood of provisions from occupied territories. Coffee drops from 40 to under 20 marks, with other staples cutting similarly while some restaurants maintain high prices.
London reports the Spanish cabinet headed by Antonio Maura, formed April 15, has resigned as per Reuters dispatch from Madrid. This official move follows days of political turmoil and shifts in government leadership.
A London man signing as F.8.T. pledges 750000 to the Victory loan and proposes returning the funds to the government as an immediate cancellation. He urges voluntary levies by the wealthy to curb debt and calls for wartime profiteers to sacrifice. No others have followed the hint.
Freehold New Jersey July 16 a 20 year old Edward O Brien boasted in county jail about the murder of Gardiner Hull in New York and claimed responsibility for the Wilkins killing. Police doubt the Wilkins confession and say he revels in notoriety seeking to appear bad to fellow inmates.
The forecast calls for fair weather tonight and Thursday with cooler temperatures across the state. No precipitation is expected and skies remain largely clear. Wind shifts may bring mild breezes but no significant weather events are anticipated.
Due to severe drought and low city reservoirs, the water department sets sprinkling times. West side may water 7 p m to 9 p m, east side north of railroad tracks 7 a m to 9 a m. An official notice, signed by Mayor W P Whitaken, appears in this issue. Special officers will halt service for violations.
London dated July 15 reports a 3400 strong composite regiment of U S soldiers led by General Pershing will lead the Victory march in London on July 19. Alphabetical nation order places Americans in the place of honor after the Belgians and French. The British empire troops march behind the allied contingents. Pershing also decorates British officials in London.
Washington reports that congress has clear authority to fix a maximum alcohol content of beverages at one half of one percent for enforcement. Wayne B. Wheeler of the Anti Saloon League testifies before the senate judiciary sub committee opposing 2 percent beer and urging stronger seizure powers and broader definitions of intoxicants. Wheeler cites state laws and urges amendments to curb storage in homes and bootlegging while senators push back on warrant extensions and testifying requirements. Levi Cooke argues to regulate industrial alcohol and preserve 60,000,000 gallons held in bond.
New York July 16 A strike by firemen oilers and water tenders halted coastwise steamers causing freight build up on piers. About 600 ships were tied up in port including 101 American steamships 186 owned by the Shipping Board 71 British and 38 Norwegian or Swedish vessels.
New York reports Ferdinand M. Schupp a pitcher for the National Danis club was traded to the St Louis Nationals in exchange for catcher Frank Snyder. Schupp once showed promise before Army service and return to form has not regained his prewar control or effectiveness.
Washington July 16. The foreign relations committee studied the peace treaty section by section as debate on Shantung resumes. Senator Sherman plans to speak, Senator Borah may press a letter from Bliss Lansing and White, and copies of treaties affecting China. Committee also moved Part 4 discussions to future and approved extending the arbitration treaty with Italy Spain and the Netherlands.
President Wilson plans to meet Republican and Democratic senators at the White House to discuss the peace treaty and the league of nations. He will wait for the foreign relations committee to decide if it wishes to confer before a wider tour. Senators Swanson Owens Pomerene Chamberlain and others were among those invited or visiting.
