A Bern dispatch quoted by a Rome agency reported four of Germanys largest modern submarines were destroyed by American warships escorting the first wave of American troops to France. The report came via Rome and Central News.
Washington July 16 The War Department says drawing for army selective conscription likely cannot occur before Saturday at the earliest due to states not completing exemption board organization. Fifteen states have not reported completion of their exemption boards.
In Jerome Arizona a suit case linked to I W W leader known as Red Thompson contained two boxes of dynamite caps and letters alleging plans to disrupt copper mining. Sixty two others were deported last Tuesday and held at Prescott.
A cavalry troop was sent to Ray today after unrest reports. No disorders occurred in Ray though I W W members were seen entering the town in large numbers. Deputy sheriffs in Douglas and Bisbee swear in special deputies to swell the force to 5000. The two cities remain quiet.
In Calumet and Red Jacket on July 15 crowds demonstrated against the Industrial Workers of the World after a mass meeting denounced I W W as nets of treason and urged unity among miners. Banners carried patriotic slogans during the march through the towns.

In San Francisco on July 16 the trial of Joseph J. Scott former collector of internal revenue for the district began in federal court. He faces indictments charging embezzlement of government funds and wine tax stamps. Scott was dismissed from the service following the charges.
Report from Vienna says German and Bohemian members of Austria's parliament adopted a joint resolution calling for peaceful coexistence with Czechs within the country and preserving national self determination for both groups. It adds that a separate Bohemian constitution would not be recognized.
The Clark woman arrested with Sam Reed and four children is freed on the case against her. Sheriff Ma bey held Reed on liquor charges. The four children Clarence Gladys Lafau Alberta were sent to Boise's Children’s Home Society, then returned to their father after Judge Hyde’s recommendation and society consent. The couple reportedly seeks reconciliation.
Washington July 16 A Board of Flag Officers led by Admiral Mayo met at the Navy Department to select officers for promotion to meet the service’s new war footing. Five captains will be promoted to rear admiral, twenty six commanders to captains, and fifty one lieutenant commanders to commanders.
