Samuel R. McKelvie, Farm Board member for wheat, said bread prices are too high. He noted it makes little difference in bread retail cost whether wheat sells at $1.50 or $1.00 per bushel, as board members push reductions in meat fruit and vegetable prices.
A clash between Cahautache and Zoyatlan residents in Ayutla Guerrero leaves ten dead and many wounded, according to La Prensa's correspondent.
Five hundred men including 100 delegates to the United Spanish War Veterans state convention formed a nine mile line to fight a raging forest fire in the Cascade foothills near Bend Oregon. The blaze had scorched more than four thousand acres of timber and spread after breaking containment. Fire crews concentrated near Big Springs as winds drove the flames through yellow pine stands. F H Brundage chief of fire control in the north Pacific region accompanied delegates arriving to assess the fire impact.
John MacDonald, who testified against Mooney and Billings in the 1916 San Francisco Preparedness Day bombing, says his testimony was perjured. He was released in Baltimore and will travel to California to tell Governor Young the evidence against the two men was false.
Boston report: five youths and a girl perished after a sudden squall capsized their craft off Scituate. Only survivor Barden Garceau, 23, describes clinging to the wreckage as the others vanished one by one. the girl, Miss Munsell, was the last to die. The body of Miss Munsell was found nearby as Garceau was rescued hours later.

Mary Frances McClenny 20 returns home two weeks after disappearing with Harry Dickinson who posed as Mrs and Mrs Jones. Dickinson surrendered to police on aabduction charge and posted $1000 bail for July 18. McClenny said she fled with knowledge of Dickinsons marriage and parental objections.

Notorious Chicago gunman Fred Burke remains at large with a $101,000 reward as detectives raid a Hess Lake cottage in Newago County. Burke and a blonde companion fled hours before officers arrived, after tips from Chicago racketeer Thomas Bonner’s widow connected Burke to a string of murders and bank robberies. Authorities confiscated whiskey and weapons. Burke’s exact whereabouts unknown.
Chicago police, led by John Norton, questioned William Smith and said Fred Burke did not appear at a Ne wago Michigan summer home raided in connection with the slaying of Thomas Bonner, a petty racketeer. Burke was identified by a police informant as the killer.

Motley H. Flint Los Angeles financier was killed in the Los Angeles county hall of justice courtroom as Frank P. Keaton opened fire after Flint testified in a suit involving the Security First National Bank of Los Angeles. The shot followed Flint’s ties to the Julian Petroium stock swindle and other charges.
Three people died and four injured in a collision involving two cars and a bus just inside Lawrence city limits. Victims include William E. Stickel and Mrs. Ella Stickel of Kansas City and Mrs. E. C. Leinbach, with Leinbach severely injured. Bernard Riewe and two passengers were involved. Riewe held for negligence inquiry.
London July 14 The widow of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle says a spirit message from her late husband came through a medium at a public memorial. The message reportedly asks to tell Mary and references Doyle being buried at Windlesham Sussex. The audience distrusted the medium as 50 to 60 left during the séance.
