Fifty two District of Columbia motorists received red stickers at police headquarters after car inspections showed fifty vehicles used excessive gasoline. They were given ten days to make mechanical adjustments and curb fuel waste amid a gasoline shortage.
George Yates 50 a Burley businessman died after his car overturned following a collision on the Heyburn highway. Ed Campbell 18 riding with Yates escaped with minor bruises. two Heyburn brothers were unhurt. Yates died at a Burley hospital. he owned part of a cigar store and ran the Domino club in Pocatello.
Idaho Falls defeated Pocatello 10 to 8 in a ragged Pioneer League game on Saturday. Both teams had five errors while Idaho Falls outhit 11 to 8 as the Russets struck first, then tied and pulled ahead with key innings. Turpen and Peters pitched for Idaho Falls with four walks issued by the visitors.

The Northern Pacific railway paid Mrs. Martha A. Reeves eight thousand dollars today for the death of her husband Engineer Charles F. Reeves in a June 13 freight train wreck near Athol Idaho. His fireman also died when the locomotive left the track.
Walter D. Fuller president of NAM says a nationwide telegraphic survey of 20 airplane and defense production centers shows current aluminum supply meets defense needs, while non defense industry receives very little. He notes most factories had been warned of possible shortages.
The forecast calls for fair conditions Sunday and Monday with scattered afternoon thunderstorms near the mountains. Temperatures hold steady with little change.
Seymore Potts a 36 year old Union Pacific brakeman died when an east bound freight dragged him after he crawled beneath to repair a brake at Bliss Idaho. A tramp set the air brake and helped stop the train. Potts born Jan 20 1905 in Parsons Kansas served since 1918 with UP and had worked in Pocatello Nampa and Montpelier. He is survived by his widow Esther and siblings. funeral plans pending.
In Salt Lake City on July 12 the Ogden Reds extended their Pioneer Baseball League lead to 6 1/2 games by beating Salt Lake City 7 to 3 before 3 982 fans. The Reds broke a tight game with four runs in the last three innings, sparked by Frank Baumbholtz who scored Vernon Stone after a walk. Gallen and Salt Lake combined for errors and late runs as Tate and Morris held.
The Minneapolis Sunday Tribune and Star Journal reports Joe Louis the world heavyweight champion has reconciled with his wife after she filed for divorce charging cruelty. Louis left for Chicago following a one round knockout of Jim Robinson and telephoned his wife and mother. Mrs Louis told him she regretted suing for divorce and was willing to start anew.
Production started today four months ahead of schedule on the first of four assembly lines at the army's $30,000,000 shell loading plant in Elwood Illinois. Lieut Col T C Gerber praised the 400 assembly buildings and machines covering 23 square miles as the largest shell loading plant now operating in the United States and possibly the world.
Clarence W. Thomas of Burley was elected president of the Idaho bar commission at the annual convention in Sun Valley. L. E. Glennon of Pocatello was named vice president and Paul Hyatt of Lewiston was chosen commissioner for the northern division. Everett B. Taylor of New York warned that Idaho's six month prohibition clause raises questions about the statute.
British troops halted fire in Syria and began armistice talks on British terms with Vichy general Dentz. A French delegation crossed lines at Acre to negotiate while hostilities paused and Suez route damage was reported.
A Huntington woman tearfully told police someone stole her 1099 dollars, sewn into a corset. She later bought a new corset, left the old one at a downtown store, and police recovered the wrapped corset and money at another woman’s home, the original owner having picked up the wrong package.
Former military training camps official Tompkins McIlvaine urges changes to the selective service act. He calls for presidential discretion to extend training or recall discharged draftees, permanent draft policy, age window 18 to 21, expanded state school military training, and retention of the National Guard within states for local service.
Senator Wheeler of Montana said at a press conference that if President Roosevelt asked for a declaration of war he would provide no more than 10 or 15 votes in the Senate. He challenged the President to seek a declared war instead of a back door approach. He warned against being cajoled or stampeded into war and said those aiming for entry are determined to go in.
The Soviet Union asserts German forces made no significant gains on the 2,000 mile front while Berlin and Moscow issued parallel war reports. Vitebsk fell. Leningrad and Kiev threats persist as German panzer units advance and RAF bombers pound Germany.
American Falls Sun Valley was chosen as the 1942 convention site for the southern Idaho Moose association. At the fourteenth annual gathering with 16 lodges present, Harry H. Wallace of Twin Falls was elected president for the coming term, with Edward Halverson Jerome vice president, Mrs. Dora Wilkerson Caldwell secretary, and W. H. Mullins Boise treasurer. Wallace will appoint district presidents and trustees to serve with current holdovers, including Mrs. Ersal Cornelison Fort Hall and Earl Kennedy Jerome.
Atlantic Coast Line reports two engines and first eight coaches of the Champion streamliner derailed but upright after striking a cow near Walhbourville Georgia. Early word says no injuries to passengers or crew and main line expected to reopen within a few hours.
Mrs. Edwin S. Harper of Twin Falls, a former Pocatello society figure, is resting easier at General hospital after two operations in the past week. Her husband is a former Pocatello chamber of commerce president and a noted Idaho potato broker.
