Augusta July 13 The South Carolina legislative committee resumed its inquiry into graft in the state liquor dispensary Testimony was set from detective K E Reed assistant to William J Burns Burns alleged high officials grafted in liquor purchases sold pardons and protected violators The hearings take place in Georgia to obtain testimony from Thomas B Alder Atlanta attorney aiding the case
Washington reports indicate the Archbald impeachment case will not be tried by the Senate this summer. The decision points to an earlier adjournment of Congress than previously expected.
Jesse Willard the new white hope from Oklahoma will make his New York debut next month. He stands six feet six inches in height and weighs over 230 pounds.

Senator Bailey of Texas in a farewell dinner address warned that if U S conditions change as rapidly in thirty years as in the last thirty, the nation may face a situation akin to the French revolution. He blamed Congress cowardice for current unrest and said the Democrats overstate existing evils.

Stockholm July 13 The United States secured first and third in the 400 metres final to extend its lead. Hans Braum of Germany took second after Young of Boston A. A. was disqualified. The U S also took three places in the 3000 metre team race with Sneeden second and Great Britain third. Finn A R Taipale added three points with the discus record.
In Stockholm on July 18 the final 400 metres flat race featured four top American sprinters against one non American Hans Braum of Germany. Charles D. Ridpath of Syracuse University won the race with Braum placing second. The program also included the standing high jump, 3000 metres team final, discus right and left hand final, and Decathlon events.
Senator Borah introduces a bill to protect entrymen under the old homestead law from prejudicial loss due to not electing under a later act. It relieves them from the second year cultivation rule and requires proof of cultivation for one eighth of the entry. The Interior Department would apply the law strictly to old-law entrants, and Borah aims to amend a major appropriation bill to gain passage.
In Stockholm on July 13 the United States finished first in the 3000 metres team race with Sweden second and England third. Platt Arms of the New York A. C. won the finals of the standing high jump.

Wyethville Virginia July 13 The jury in the Claude Allen case member of the Allen gang charged with assassinating court officers at Hillsville reported an agreement was impossible The jury was discharged and a new venire ordered for a new trial The case went to jury at 530 this evening.
A Portuguese newspaper reports that Plaiz in Spain has received a collective note from England and France. The note insists Spain must honor the Portuguese republic and enforce neutrality on the frontier, signaling international law pressures.
Denver July 18 The Duke and Duchess of Connaught have been invited by the Chamber of Commerce to visit Denver.
A July 13 tornado ripped through Grand Rapids Michigan injuring forty or more and causing thousands of dollars in damage. The storm entered from the south at 4 am, striking the city market and central League baseball park where the roof of the grand stand was lifted and scattered. Police reserves and fire department were called as panic spread through the market and residential areas. In Kenosha Wisconsin Mrs EK P Rintz was killed and many injured as a suburban tornado knocked down houses and barns and ruined crops.
James A. Purtell of Idaho’s state board of equalization visited Assessor Case and praised Pocatello as a future jobbing center. He recalled Pocatello’s rough early days, described local figures, and noted tax assessment concerns in Bannock County as the new assessment method proves mooted and unstable.
