Washington July 12 reports say Taft and cabinet lawyers will re draft the corporation tax amendment to set a one per cent levy on net corporate earnings and retain inheritance tax debate. The bill’s fate hinges on senate concessions and dutiable lists.
District Judge Alfred Budge jailed four men to the state penitentiary and committed one juvenile to the reform school after a Saturday session. Edward Fitzgibbon pleaded guilty to burglary after stealing a mining man’s suitcase in Boise. Lloyd Haworth and J W Hallen admitted guilt for robbing a man in a dark alley. Hallen was sent to the industrial school at St Anthony for being under 18. Charles Smith pleaded guilty to beating and robbing a camper near the Wye. James Anglum burglarized the Pocatello Cash Grocery and took canned goods and three hams. Jen Genen planned to plead guilty but awaits next term due to the new sentence law.
A cyclone wind hit St. Louis and suburbs today snapping telegraph and telephone wires. The steamer Alton carrying 300 passengers was driven as it passed under a bridge near Alton Illinois, tearing part of its wheel house against a pier.
Fire damp in a Bellemez coal mine traps workers in Spain. Two dozen survivors and seventeen corpses recovered amid rescue efforts as authorities battle to reach others still inside.
Fire of mysterious origin destroyed Albert H. Black's barn on his ranch north of the city at 3 pm yesterday. Two horses died, and loss includes a wagon, buggy, three sets of harness, 20 chickens and a chicken house valued at about 1500 dollars. Black saved the residence by pumping water by hand and focusing on the engine house. The blaze started in the loft and its cause remains unknown. Black, senior partner in Black & Lathrop, will rebuild at once.
United States Commissioner Theo dore Turner and Supervising Engineer John P. Congdon met in McCammon with Chris T. Woodall to form a three member arbitration panel. They aim to resolve farmer conflicts in the Oneida district with the Portneuf Marsh Valley Irrigation company to avoid costly litigation.
Butte delegates to the Western Federation of Miners meet in Denver to depose Charles Moyer as head. They back P. W. Flynn of Butte for president and favor referendum elections rather than convention voting. The Socialist faction opposes Moyer.
Valparaiso reports rising disorder in La Paz after an Argentine boundary ruling, signaling imminent war between Peru and Bolivia. Chile stays neutral but mobilizes ships to safeguard its interests.
The Elks beat the Traveling Men 28 to 18 at the east side grounds in a chaotic game filled with errors. Captain Frank Conroy of the Travelers waged a mixed battle, while the Elks exploited early misplays to surge ahead, then held on as the Travelers rallied with a twelve-run seventh inning.
The Minidoka and Southwestern Railroad board approved amendments to its articles to extend the line from Minidoka to Nyssa via Bull Twin Falls Owyhee and Canyon counties a 175 mile reach with new branches from this line to Glenns Ferry Burley Oakley and a northward link to the main line. The plan aims to open the Snake River region to irrigation backed by financier Frank H Buhl and Kuhn Bull interests and to create a south side cutoff that avoids King Hill.
Memorial services were held for Mrs Regina Pond, 72, in Salt Lake City and Richmond, Utah. She originated in Sweden, came to the U S in 1863, lived much of her life in Richmond, and was a longtime Relief Society president. Survived by Noah, Lysander, and Alonzo, with funeral at the new tabernacle and a large attendance.
Soren P. Jensen of Hawkins Basin asked the county board of equalization at the courthouse to cut farm property assessments due to severe drought and potential crop failures. The board said they could act only on sworn statements from affected farmers. Jensen returned to collect documents.
The Pocatello Hubs defeated Idaho Falls 12 to 10 after a late rally in the eighth inning. A bench-clearing fight occurred in the third between Fortier and Johnson as Osborne held Sunnylanders scoreless for seven frames before allowing five runs in the eighth.
In police court Pat Shea pleaded guilty to battery and was sentenced to 30 days in default of a 45 fine. William Duneen John Russell and George Gagen were found trespassing on railroad property and each will serve 344 days on the chain gang.
In Pasadena delegates to the Elks stand lodge began the opening week with an auto parade. About 65,000 visitors are in Los Angeles for the event. Leading candidates for ruler are J. U. Sammis and August Hermann.
