Court House Bid Tops $16 963 With 15 000 Guard

County board reviews bids for a new court house per George Brough plans. J F Murray submitted a bid of 16 963 for erecting the building excluding heating and plumbing, with heating options at 2360 or 650 for hot air. Board seeks Brough guarantee to keep total under 15 000 and reconvenes after discussions. Deputy sheriff George Ross appointed without pay. Flood Alarm Causes Jail Panic at County Facility

A fire alarm at the county jail triggered a flood after inmates tampered with a water tap. Deputy Griffith and Officer Jackson responded after twenty minutes. The flooded corridor blocked access and caused inmates to fear drowning until the water was shut off and order restored.

The Spencer Idaho sale of J D Wood’s timber rights reached 600000 pounds at 13 cents per pound. Idaho news notes report saloons may stay open all night in Moscow pending mayoral veto and wrap up regional chatter on mining, sheep herding, grasshopper experiments, and a bear encounter near Salmon.

Judge Beatty Rules Mining Rights in Bitter Root Conflict

In United States v Newsome and Leggett Creek Hydraulic Mining Co the court in Idaho County grants the company the right to construct a ditch for cone and placer mining within Bitter Root forest reserve. The ruling says the mining ground held in common allows use of timber from one claim on another strictly for mining purposes, prohibits export or sale of the timber, and requires authorization by the Secretary of the Interior or duly authorized agents to sell claims.

Surface Survey Data on Idaho Lands from U S Surveyor General

The U S Surveyor General reports Idaho total area as 53 883 648 acres with 34 705 919 acres unsurveyed and 19 077 729 acres surveyed. For FY ended June 30 1901 appropriations for agricultural surveys were 30 400 dollars and 1 301 mineral and agricultural plots were prepared, up from 510 in 1897. The report lists areas surveyed unsurveyed per county and totals for lode placer millsite claims surveyed and approved to July 1 1901.

The city council of Pocatello invites bids to construct crosswalks across streets and alleys for the coming year.
