U S Vice Consul William M Olive was released after three days in jail in Shanghaj by Communist police and said to have been brutally beaten. Consul General John Cabot questioned Olive’s reported remarks as coerced by mistreatment. Olive, 32, of Ironton Missouri, was arrested during a mass parade commemorating the Japanese war anniversary.
H E Martin Pogatello named manager of the Southeast Idaho medical bureau which opened offices in the Kane building. The bureau, formed by leading physicians, offers a monthly prepaid plan to employee groups of five or more through the Southeast Idaho Medical Association to provide medical care for employees and their families. The plan covers home and office visits, hospital services, ambulance, X rays, lab work, and more with cooperation from local doctors.
Keith E. Lubeck faced arraignment before Probate Judge Willard on a complaint accusing him of lending to a four year old girl. His bond was set at 300 dollars and he was committed in lieu of bond. Police say Lubeck’s record shows prior similar cases in Salt City. He is married.
Glen Nielsen two year old son of Mr and Mrs Ferrin Nielsen drowned in an irrigation ditch near his home Friday night. The body was recovered about ninety minutes after a search began by his parents and local neighbors.
Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek arrived in the Philippines for secret talks with President Elpidio Quirino. A reliable source said Chiang flew from Formosa to Baguio and would avoid Manila if possible. The meeting was expected to cover an anti-Communist Pacific alliance and related topics.

Officer A Z Aumick suffered severe injuries Thursday after his motorcycle overturned when a fruit truck turned off a road near Gould and Pole Line Road. He will miss about four days of duty. Virgil Hunter, driver of the truck, pleaded guilty to reckless driving.
Firefighters were called at 10:35 a m Saturday morning to the Idaho Power company service department basement where a short in the battery charger caused heavy smoke. No blaze occurred as power was shut off. Damage was limited to the charger, according to Chief A A Girard.
Police investigated a 2:56 p m Saturday crash in the 1100 block East Clark. Keith H Gill 20 of 1115 East Clark drove from the curbside and collided with Wanda I Crowley of 1244 East Lander who was traveling east. Minor damage occurred to the sedan front fender running board and door and to the coupe front fender.
A Jefferson County grand jury indicted 45 individuals in the Birmingham area probe of hooded mob violence. The cases involve floggings cross burnings and threats mainly in coal mining hamlets west of Birmingham.
A 10 month old Fort Hall girl named Carole Ingram with an enlarged heart faces a 50 50 survival chance without a $5 000 Chicago operation. Her three aunts organize a charity dance in Pocatello to raise funds and speed the trip, with proceeds and ballroom use donated. Carole remains hospitalized in Ogden and Orden hospital with pneumonia.
Rupert Medina 22 and four Mexican laborers were in a 1929 Ford coach that flipped onto its side and rolled after Medina swerved one mile north of Chubbuck at 7 p m Saturday. All five were treated at General Hospital for minor cuts and bruises. they worked as beer thinners for W R Wardl of Chubbuck.
