The Japanese launched a new southwest thrust from Nanchang in a drive for the Kiangsi Hunan line as China clings to a 25 mile Chekiang Kiangsi sector. The move aims to build an overland rail trunk linking Shanghai and Sineannra.
In a secret military commission in Washington eight German-born men go on trial for alleged saboteur acts. They landed by U boats on Long Island and Florida and were rounded up by FBI after entry to the United States.
The navy reports a Dutch cargo ship sunk by an enemy submarine in the Caribbean with all 37 aboard rescued. Three more merchantmen are damaged in the region, bringing the toll to 113. Mexico's dive bombing attack targets a submarine in the Gulf of Mexico as Argentina orders passes to dock at U S Gulf ports.
Two of seven girl inmates at the Utah state industrial school who escaped Saturday after overpowering two matrons were in custody Wednesday, per superintendent F A Child. The searched group, aged around 20, fled after cutting the phones. Utah Idaho search efforts have continued for four days.

Handsome Cary Grant and heiress Barbara Hutton were married in Lake Arrowhead California. Grant, 38, had a prior marriage to Virginia Cherrill. Hutton's fortune is estimated between 20 and 30 million dollars. she was born November 14 1912 in New York, daughter of Franklyn Laws Hutton and Edna Woolworth.
Salt Lake City AP reports the state board of correction suspended two guards Neil Ipson and Frank Capson following an inquiry into last Saturday's escape of three inmates. In San Francisco AP notes Governor Olson said the Army Western Defense Command refused to relax restrictions on Japanese for emergency farm work.
Second Lt. Robert Barton Jr of Charleston West Virginia was killed in a B 24 crash in the desert eight miles southeast of Davis Monthan air base. Seven crew members were injured in the incident.
Three officers and four enlisted men died when an army bomber crashed and burned during a routine night training flight on Bonneville salt flats near Wendover Utah. The victims include First Lt Arthur L Birloffi Second Lt Van Vanderbie Second Lt Floyd R Reno Pvt J R Swann Pvt Kenneth M Gillies Pvt Eugene P Halsey and Pvt Homer R Emschler. All bodies were recovered and an investigation began.
The WPA shuts the Pocatello district offices consolidating admin work in Boise to cut costs under reduced appropriations. Old district field operations move to an area office and several projects and construction jobs are suspended or closed, affecting about 550 workers in the forepart of July.
A Union Pacific group led by President W M Jeffers departs Omaha in a special train to inspect railroad property and defense plants across the West visiting Portland Seattle Bonneville Pendleton Pocatello Ogden Salt Lake City Las Vegas Los Angeles Provo Denver and Kansas City. The tour ends July 24.
Two Brigham City men Richard Harris 23 piloting the light trainer plane and Don Rex 26 were gravely injured when the plane crashed on a farm south of Brigham City. Harris’s father Henry Harris witnessed the accident. The monoplane owned by Lou Watts of Logan was smashed beyond repair.
Mel Van Keuren a 20 year old sailor wounded at Pearl Harbor walked into a Red Cross plasma bank and donated a pint of blood. He said his life was saved by the Red Cross at Pearl Harbor and by eight transfusions and pledged to give back pint for pint.
Bill Stoker son of Mr and Mrs Alfred W Stoker of 905 North Garfield returned Wednesday morning to Cheyenne where he is on duty at Fort Russell after a 10 day furlough in Pocatello.
Airmen transfer Jim Mackay station manager for Western Air at Pocatello airport to Butte Montana to take charge there. Walt Wilson former local employee will succeed him and has been in charge at Great Falls. Mackay began service with Western Air in 1932 with postings at Burbank Las Vegas Salt Lake Great Falls West Yellowstone and locally two years. Wilson has five years with the company and a short local tenure.
German bombers attacked the northeast English coast port Middlesbrough for a second night, starting fires and causing extensive damage. RAF operations limited by bad weather while Britain mined Nazi waters and attacked German shipping off the Netherlands coast.
The Pacific war council at the White House focused on Egypt and its link to Pacific operations. Delegates reported held positions in Egypt and expressed cautious optimism, with New Zealand's Walter Nash noting improvement over two weeks. Canada’s Leighton McCarthy cited reports of four Japanese destroyer sinkings near the Allenian islands and weather hindrances, while Dr. T V Soong spoke only of ongoing encouragement in air reinforcements.
A Captain Felsman of the Army Quartermaster Corps arrived in Pocatello to arrange housing for 500 or more troops for duty at the Pocatello Army airbase. He talked with Paul V. Nash, chamber of commerce secretary, and it was reported that CCC bar racks at Camp Bannock might be requisitioned for the troops. The chamber had no further information at the time.
The army begins mandatory deductions from soldiers’ pay for family allotments under the family allowance bill enacted June 23 with initial payments starting November 1. Deductions affect all up to sergeant in the army and third class petty officers in the navy, with class A dependents including wives and children and class B covering other relatives.
Weather notes reflect summer heat with high temperatures near 98 on Sunday and 97 on Monday, plus a cool 59 low on Tuesday. An all around weather battalion is humorously proposed for training in winter and summer terrains, with references to storms and a submarine practice in streets.
In Gallatin Missouri a 28 year old former wife and two children were found hammered to death at a rural farm. A boy, Willard Linville, was found dead hanging from a tree nearby. Linville had been missing since his car was found in a lane near the crime scene. Betty Sue Linville 7 died after being found unconscious.
Miss Marion Fuller cataloguer for the Pocatello library told the board that the American Library Association convention in Milwaukee outlined libraries wartime roles. She noted Idaho’s lone representative at the conference, and said the peace postwar depends on books read by the people.
Rae Stratford, chairman of Tenday council advancement, says 38 scouts will face the board at the Pocatello district court of honor Wednesday at 8 p m in the Fifth ward L D S hall. A total of 55 awards will be given. He notes advancement for the summer is the best yet.
The Pocatello city defense council announces a first aid class for auxiliary police to begin Wednesday at 7 36 p m at the west side fire station with Ernest Ellis as instructor. A lecture course for auxiliary firemen and fire watchers runs Tuesday evening through Friday at 7 30 p m in the police station court rooms with instructor Stanley Leeney.

Counterattacking Red Army troops were reported late Wednesday to wipe out German bridgeheads on the Don river west bank and repulse further crossings as fierce battles raged west of Voronezh. Soviet dispatches said heavy combats continued while light German units on the east bank were smashed, and most invaders held on the west bank.
Wilhelm Kunze 36 chief of the former German American band pleaded innocent to espionage charges in Hartford federal court. He was arraigned before Judge J Joseph Smith and held on 50000 dollars bail after being returned from Mexico City. Wilbur V Keegan New York attorney for the band faced a separate selective service case and arrest by FBI agents.
The United States army air transport service in Australia reported flying 5,000,000 miles in five months to rush equipment and personnel. Only one plane was lost. The service transported a complete artillery battery and ammunition, hauling 500,000 pounds in a fraction of overland time. It also flew quinine and medical supplies to the Philippines and returns wounded as ambulances. Most aircraft are converted transport planes adapted to carry guns and engines.
Washington Fourth The House Ways and Means Committee voted to drop a plan to raise 102 million dollars by increasing second and third class postal rates and sent the issue to the House Post Office Committee. Officials said new rates could not be put in place before January 1 to cover a 190 million dollar deficit. The panel cut the projected revenue to 5.922 billion and Leon Henderson Price Administrator prepared a protest against a 5 percent freight and express tax.
Fire crews responded at 9:44 p.m. Tuesday to 254 North Third for a barn fire caused by a cigarette. Owner Tom O’Rourke reported little damage and the blaze was extinguished with a bucket of water.
Mr and Mrs Richard Sorenson welcomed a daughter Tuesday at the oral hospital. The newborn is the granddaughter of Mr and Mrs W B Wardle of 1239 North Hayes and the Sorenson family resides at 1234 North Hayes.
