Mrs Edwin Carman was arrested in Freeport New York in connection with the murder of Mrs Louise Bailey killed in Carman’s office. An inquest concluded without a verdict and a warrant for arrest was sought. A witness saw a woman in a dark skirt and white waist fleeing the office after the shot while Carman testified she was in her room at the time. A detective testified a telephone recording device had been installed in Carman’s office beforehand to hear what happened in her husband’s office and that she planned to tire him away for two days during installation.
The senate approved a sundry bill allocating half a million dollars to cover expenses for the national government exhibit at the San Francisco exposition. The bill allows small sums for hosting foreign guests, a point championed by Senator Vardaman who urged back to Jeffersonian simplicity in the White House.
New York July 8 The yacht De Bonni failed to start after trouble in Nalvaris blocks while Vanities and Resolute faced a fifteen mile wind. The Resolute opened with a strong lead shortly after the start on the thirty mile course.
George Wilkinson and Maylon Van Booskerk faced a federal magistrate today on charges of using the mails to defraud. The men promoted a project to transform Sprig City Tennessee into an industrial rival to New York City, allegedly drawing thousands from investors both in Europe and the United States.
New York July 8 Progressive leaders argued with Roosevelt to accept the governor nomination. Roosevelt refused to run, stating he would not change his mind. The question remained open as discussions continued.

Edington of Perneville County declares for lieutenant governor on the Republican ticket, noted as a strong, senior figure with broad statewide backing.

Spopee the Blackfoot Indian is released after nearly a 33 year stay in a government hospital for the insane. He travels to the Montana reservation under the care of an Indian bureau official and will be delivered to his daughter at Browning. Commissioner Sells says provisions will be made for Spopee and an effort to have him applied for tribal lands.
Washington July 7 1908 to 1913 railroads of Class I invested 4 010 billion dollars cash in road and equipment. Eastern district cash outlay exceeded capital securities issued by them 19.9 percent of June 30 1913. Southern and Western districts show 21.1 percent and 23.2 percent respectively of capital securities outstanding.
George Trash files for sheriff on the Republican ticket in Bannock County. He is known from prior campaigns and is the first to enter the race as candidates begin to announce. Incumbents are expected to seek reelection and nominations should come quickly.
President Wilson declared it unfair to view Democrats as enemies of both big and small business. He backed Paul M. Warburg of New York and Thomas J. Jones of Chicago for the Federal Reserve Board, praising their patriotism and public service. He urged Warburg to reconsider accepting the nomination and expressed confidence Jones would be confirmed.
Boswell C. F. Smith, a salesman, admitted killing four year-old Hazel Weinstein. He described placing a gag in the child's mouth and lifting the body into a shop alley scene, then was arrested after a witness observed the actions.
Dr Edward Q Sisson Idaho education commissioner spent a day at the Academy praising the summer school as among the finest in the state. He commended the Academy farm and overall grounds noting good attendance and strong interest. He planned to visit the Normal school in Lewiston afterward.
Dispatches report Niagara mediators failed to win rebel acceptance for a conference with Huerta representatives to form a provisional Mexican government. In Vera Cruz, mutinous infantry under Colonel Izunza fled toward Tejeria, while 1000 constitutionalists moved from Boca del Rio. Huerta allegedly considered resignation and Garcia Pena’s succession, with a Córdoba courier noting a train prepared to transport Pena to Mexico City.
Harold F. Henwood, sentenced for the killing of George C. Copeland, had his third trial denied by the Colorado Supreme Court. Copeland was fatally wounded when Henwood shot Sylvester L. Vonphull in a Denver barroom over letters from Isabelle Patterson Springer.
A Chicago delegation met with the president to back parts of the administration anti trust program while opposing others. They urged a broader trade commission than the Newlands bill in some areas and tighter in others, and sought to ban unfair business practices. They supported a railroad securities bill but rejected annual report transfers to the trade commission.
John Krafchenko, famed Canadian bandit, faces the gallows in Winnipeg for the murder of H. M. Arnold, Plum Coulee Bank of Montreal manager, during a December 1915 bank robbery. He escaped prison, was recaptured in Winnipeg, and sentenced to death in April.
