Berlin faces intensified relief efforts as American and British air crews press the airlift. In a 24 hour span 224 flights carried 819 tons of food despite Moscow’s blockade. London diplomats note no protest wording yet and await a possible formal démarche Monday.
Frank Hague and the New Jersey delegation at the Democratic national convention lined up behind a draft Eisenhower campaign. The move would give New Jersey’s 36 convention votes to the wartime commander, who had not yet signaled acceptance. Hague had previously supported Truman. Congressman Edward J. Hart said Hague switched allegiance because Truman’s prospects changed.
Arab and Jewish leaders reportedly reject UN mediator Count Folke Bernadotte's peace plans. The four week truce in the Arab Jewish war ends July 9 and fighting continues in Jerusalem with mortars and machineguns. Haj Amin El Husseini says the Arab League bloc rejected the holy land settlement recommendations.
The United Mine Workers scale committee approved a contract granting miners in hard coal fields a one-dollar-a-day wage increase and a 10 to 20 cent per ton royalty rise. John L. Lewis announced the ratification after a two hour session but provided few details.
A firecracker killed Terry Clark Cook, 14, when a can exploded skyward and the jagged edge severed his throat while he and his younger brother used fireworks outside Eugene Oregon. He bled to death at the scene.
A RAF transport and a Swedish airliner collided in a rainstorm near Northolt airport, crashing in flames and killing all aboard both planes. Among the dead were Sir Edward Gent, Britain's high commissioner for Malaya, en route home. Passengers hailed from Scandinavia and the Middle East.
Miss Doreen or Arlene Simmons arrived at General hospital at 2 45 p m on July 4 in the annual Independence Day baby race. Her parents Mr and Mrs Simmons of 321 North Eleventh celebrate a daughter with black hair blue eyes and weighing 7 pounds 1 ounce.
In Helsinki the Communist dominated Popular Democrats suffered heavy losses in Finland's national election. Early tallies on Thursday and Friday voting suggested the party could shed almost a fourth of its 49 seats won in 1945, losing 11 or 12 seats and making the Popular Democrats the largest single party.
Firemen spent nearly two hours battling grass fires caused by fire crackers. At 11:56 a.m. the department was called to Twelfth and Benton where grass burned on a hill. Crews fought for over an hour to keep flames from reaching homes and the Idaho State college area.
Nine year old Ellen Jane Fulchler was found dead in a north end Seattle park after a hide and seek game. Officers reported bruising on her face and a chin gash with dirt piled over the body. Cause of death was not immediately determined.
Los Angeles Times reports General Dwight D. Eisenhower would accept the Democratic nomination for president only if President Truman puts his name before the national convention. A Democratic leader said he witnessed the committee approach Eisenhower, but the Democrat’s name was not disclosed.
Henry L. Mayberry, 48, a Pennsylvania Power & Light lineman, died after a lightning strike while repairing trolley wires during a wind and rainstorm. He was struck again as a fellow worker descended the pole with him. the rescuer received minor burns.
Boise reports John W. Condie former Idaho education official dies at 83 after 45 years of service. Condie served as state superintendent from 1932 to 1936 and again as assistant superintendent since 1947. The Eisenhower presidential bid gains momentum as Democrats push for a nomination.
Spokane team led by Mayor Arthur Meehan and Bill Meyerhoff captured the Pacific Northwest Telegraphic Trapshoot tournament in Spokane. Both shooters fired perfect 100s to reach a two day total of 586x600, with Wall Preston adding 95 as the third member. Eleven three man teams from Spokane Seattle and Portland newspapers competed in the spring telegraphic meets for the tourney.
Richard Rickie Allen Bresee age three died after falling from a moving car near McCammon while the vehicle was about 50 mph. He suffered a skull fracture and serious injuries. Survivors include his parents Eldon and Delores Bresee and several grandparents and relatives of Pocatello.
A new geyser eruption occurred last night at Yellowstone National Park, breaking through a paved Norris Museum road and just north of Norris Geyser Basin's trail. Park officials describe the event as a natural Fourth of July spectacle produced by nature.

Three people died in local auto crashes within 31 hours during the Fourth of July weekend in the Gate City area. Dale L. Wilson, 24, of Ogden, died when his car overturned near Pocatello en route to Yellowstone Park about 2 40 a m Saturday.
A single car overturn on Malad hill twelve miles south of Downey at 4 45 p m Sunday left Betty Hansen 14 Shelley , and Jenine Boyce 19 with injuries including lac erations and a fractured jaw The driver Preston Boyce 22 and Laura Weaver 19 were uninjured The party from Layton Utah was returning from a Fourth of July trip and the car traveled about 45 mph State Policeman Carl Muir and Alfred Nogo investigated the crash
A Worcester man mistook New Yorks main airport for a smaller field on Long Island. Alfred Stranieri asked an official if he had reached Columbia Field, but was told he had landed at New York International Airport the worlds largest air hub.
Ed Gilbert claimed the trophy dash and the fast car race at the Pocatello Mid get Auto Assn. event on July 4 at the South Main track. Bill Paulson won the slow car race and A nix captured the twenty lap main event. Jack Lombard reported seven entrants in the event to the association president.
Twelve year old Tommy Black visiting relatives Mr and Mrs Harry Stedtfeldt in Preston became stuck high in a tree on the Fourth of July after pruning a dead branch. Firefighters arrived just after noon to rescue him.

Mr and Mrs Howard R Nate son, both 99 Greenwood, escaped drowning when their boat overturned during a storm on Henrys lake. They clung to a submerged tree root for three and a half hours before a passing motorist rescued them. They were 200 yards from shore and suffered shock and exposure but no serious injuries. The Nates are on a weekend fishing trip.
