A running gunfight in Salt Lake City ended with the capture of three Utah convicts after they broke from the state prison. Pat McLaughlin, 30, died from injuries sustained during the escape attempt. Police pursued the escapees through city streets, culminating in their apprehension 33 minutes after the breakout.
Three inmates overpowered a prison turnkey and stole an automobile during a sports event at Fort Douglas. A police chase through Salt Lake City ended on a bridge where their car overturned. Norman E Standard and Thomas F Nemier were injured lightly and returned to prison. McLoughlin was an habitual criminal with a long Salt Lake City record.

Staff Sergeants Kari Berg aged 22 and John H. Liles Jr., 21, were killed Saturday when their plane crashed in a swampy area about 10 miles north of Tyndall Field during a routine training flight. They were attached to the air forces gunnery school.
