Across the United States the Fourth of July holiday claimed at least 76 lives by nightfall, with 59 road deaths in 24 states and 16 drownings. A Chicago girl was the only direct fireworks fatality, as accidents marred celebrations nationwide.
Hollywood July 4 veteran joke dealer Al Boasberg defines comedy as anything a majority finds funny and says death disease and misfortune provoke laughs while weddings religions and certain groups do not. He recalls past gags and the failed Lindbergh joke in a discussion of humor.

Police kept close watch on George Mortensen after officials quoted him admitting to killing his parents in law and another relative in Ogden Utah. A vial of poison was found on him as he was taken into custody. Mortensen said he planned to kill himself if arrested but changed his mind. Utah officials were expected to transport him back to Ogden for further proceedings. Grace Mortensen, his wife, was injured in the incident. Ogden officers Hawking and Keeter planned to accompany the prisoner and return him to Utah.

Stevenson, a gubernatorial candidate, spent hours with Zioncheck who then introduced both on a radio program. Zioncheck mused about future plans, weighing congress governor or dog catcher. Roosevelt's reelection seen as likely according to Zioncheck.
Burley publisher Henry Dworshak said he is seriously considering a Republican bid for Idaho Second Congressional District. Supporters, including ex State Senator I E Rockwell, circulated petitions. Dworshak ran unsuccessfully in 1934. No Republican has announced. current Democrat D Worth Clark seeks re election against Twin Falls Mayor Duncan M Johnston who has Townsend endorsement.
Gov Alf M Landon and his party departed Estes Park after a ten day Rocky Mountain vacation. They stopped at Greeley to view a rodeo then headed to Denver and on to Kansas. Mrs Landon and the children remain in Colorado while he delivers his nomination speech in Topeka on July 23.

President Roosevelt spoke from Monticello urging Americans toward true freedom and leaders of Jeffersonian caliber. He warned only limited by national desire and determination and stressed education to empower responsibility, then visited Jefferson’s grave and placed a White House laurel wreath before departing for Richmond and the Potomac.
A Tillamook Oregon accident killed four when a car skidded off a road embankment and plunged about 100 feet onto a railroad right of way. The victims were a couple named Mee and another pair identified by coroner R N Henkle. The crash occurred after the car passed a line of traffic on a soft shoulder.
Senator William E. Borah told about 10 000 Fourth of July celebrants in Filer Idaho he would discuss monopoly and the nation s money problems in coming months. He said both parties aim to destroy monopoly but urged courage to use constitutional powers to regulate money and end private control.
