Martial law was proclaimed as four civilians were killed and about fifty wounded in a mining strike clash. Troops fought rioters through the night with cavalry charges, looting, and arson as ambulances and Red Cross crews moved amid darkness.
The House Rules Committee approved a resolution to broaden investigations into lobbying. The probe would examine if any organization currently maintains or previously maintained a lobby to influence legislation and grant the committee extensive authority to probe.
Thousands of veterans began the homeward march after greetings with new comrades in Gettysburg. By night more than half of the 50,009 army likely will have gone. Five provisional field hospitals report few patients and most may be discharged tomorrow. Seven seriously ill patients move from the state emergency hospital to Harrisonburg.

Desperate fighting has raged since yesterday near Velles between Serbian and Bulgarian forces with Bulgarians repelling a southern Serbian wing and expected to seize Velles. A wide battle near Saloniki involves 80 000 Greeks against 100 000 Bulgarians, decisive for the Greek Bulgarian campaign. Greeks reach Bulgarian trenches. a wild hand to hand fight erupts as Nigrita’s Greek division wins.
London dispatch reports 1384 Bulgarian prisoners arriving at Belgrade were paraded before a vast crowd of Serbians. Wounded men rode in a wagon three deep as cheering crowds surged, and the correspondent says the scene makes peace between Bulgaria and Serbia seem impossible.
Belgrade reports Bulgarian forces attacked Senyetchar a Servian frontier town. After a serious engagement the Bulgarians were repulsed and driven from fortified positions. They then set up on the left banks of the Bregalinitza and Zhelinitza rivers following their first defeat.
Saloniki dispatches report Greek forces captured the small town of Lahana from Bulgarians. It is described as a crucial position near Serres, about twenty miles northeast, with heavy casualties reported on both sides.
The Greek news account from Atlantis reports the Kilkish battle ended with a Bulgarian defeat after bombardment and a bayonet assault. Greeks captured sixty cannons and occupied the town while pursuing retreating Bulgarians who left field and machine guns behind.
Washington July 5 Opposition to a rule binding all Democrats to support the tariff bill without change led to an adjournment of the Senate caucus until Monday. Only 31 of 51 Democrats attended and several objected to final action with a sparse turnout. Adjournment was set for Monday afternoon as members prepare to press for full attendance. The effective date of the wool schedule remains unsettled with many urging immediate implementation.
The Good year balloon, which departed Kansas City yesterday, passed over Galena Illinois early this morning moving slowly north at low altitude in a balloon contest.
A telegram from Joliet Illinois at 6 25 a m reports a balloon battling a storm overnight en route to Kansas City. The message indicates smooth progress despite severe weather. The Missouri City of St Louis receives the Post Dispatch account via telegram from the Kansas City Post confirming ongoing flight conditions.
In Atlanta on July 5 a robber barricaded inside the Kirkwood post office blew the safe and fought officers and locals. He claimed to be from Philadelphia before being mortally wounded by a bullet as a posse closed in.
A severe thunderstorm struck Duluth Minnesota last night causing extensive damage with multiple fires starting in a dozen locations. At least four houses burned to the ground as the storm unleashed fierce lightning and heavy rain.
The Short Line railroad pays Bannock county 1912 taxes in full with a $60,173.40 check and currency. County Assessor L B Case accepts payments all day Monday due to a holiday and Sunday deadline, but offices close after 5 pm to avoid delinquency. the line pays more tax in Bannock than any other county in the state.
Ogden Utah July 5 Twenty four hurt when two loaded Ogden Rapid Transit coaches collided head on two miles from the city. Peter Buller Salt Lake City and John Sherman Ogden were seriously injured with Buller later leg amputated. Motorman Sherman clung to his post and was towed free as workers rushed to aid victims. The cause is under investigation while passengers were rushed to Dee hospital.
J B Thatcher of Challis found an empty rig, single harness, a cap from a Salt Lake firm, and an empty whiskey bottle along Big Lost River desert near Howe. The outfit looked abandoned for at least a week, with witnesses seeing the gear on the Idaho Falls to Howe route but no clue to the rider or horse.
Des Moines July 5 governor Seaal anpied tetey was examined by physicians after an ailment of coliver. The doctors issued a bulletin stating his condition as satisfactory.
San Francisco reports the National ensign of Peru was cut yesterday from the residence of the consul at Para amid a flare of anti foreign flag sentiment. The act signals growing hostility toward foreign flags in the region.
