The second annual Days of Old Fort Hall celebration begins at 1 30 this afternoon at Bannock county fair grounds with a grand entry parade to follow. Community stock ownership aims to sustain the event as it seeks growth comparable to Cheyenne Frontier Days and Pendleton.
Ervine Mertz jailed for two years after being found guilty in federal court of transporting Virginia Dean Neilsen from Preston Idaho to Sacramento California in alleged white slave act case. City council authorized issuing 65 000 tax anticipation notes at six percent to place all current warrants on a cash basis. Funds from First Security Bank via J C Galbraith will cover warrants through the fiscal year with commitments to loan more through winter. Mayor Brown and council members praised the move easing city finances and warrant cashing for workers and merchants.

Grants Pass Oregon July 1 Two youths Henry Bowles 21 and John Barrier 17 captured on Mount Sexton near the Pacific highway confessed to slaying state policeman Burrell Baucom Barrier said to have fired the fatal shots Bowles and Barrier admitted stealing a car in Los Angeles and driving north without stopping Police said Barrier hid an automatic pistol and Baucom was killed while talking with Bowles during a stop and search for the California car.
President Roosevelt tonight rejected the proposal in its present form after a briefing from Raymond Moley and British and European gold bloc leaders. Secretary of State Hull will explain U S policy on Monday. France and other gold standard nations warned they might quit the conference over dollar fluctuations. Mayor Charles A. Brown outlines a plan to replace the Center Street viaduct with a subway linking the east and west city sides to ease traffic and unemployment under the National Recovery Act. The proposal, endorsed at a Bannock luncheon, cites the viaduct’s poor approaches and winter unsuitability, and names Short Line manager H J Plumhof in a supporting letter.
Colonel Roscoe Turner wins the cross country air race from New York to Los Angeles in 11 hours 30 minutes setting a new transcontinental speed record. Jimmie Wedell finishes second, Amelia Earhart among the other challengers, while Russell Bordman lies injured in Indianapolis after a crash.
South Bend Ind July 1 Albert Russell Erskine 62 former head of Studebaker ended his life at his estate after receivership ended his tenure. He shot himself in the heart and left a note for his adopted son Albert Russell Erskine Jr. The death followed his wife leaving for breakfast and occurred near the Studebaker plant at a golf course he donated to the city. Hope Hoff man announced the death hours later. Erskine began as a bookkeeper and urged Studebaker officials to build cars rather than wagons.
