Idaho House reprieves a repeal bid on the chain store tax as Rep. Edwin Snow wins reconsideration of house bill 106. The measure would tax all retail stores with a flat $5 annual license rather than the current scale up to $500 per store in chains of 20 or more. The vote was 30 to 27 to place the bill on further action after a recess.
As the haylift enters its second week the army deploys planes helicopters tractors and bulldozers to move fodder to cattle and sheep. Nebraska faces an estimated 326 million dollars in cattle losses while Wyoming reports tens of thousands of cattle and sheep lost and Nevada expects more losses.
Nine-year-old Laverne Finnerty raced into a flame swept farmhouse and pulled three brothers to safety through a first floor window. A fifth child died in the fire as it spread through the two story home housing nine children and three adults.

Officials of the Hammond Times and the AFL union planned to finalize a back-to-work agreement today after printers voted 489 to 254 to accept a 12.50 weekly raise. The settlement affects only the Hammond paper and does not alter the broader Chicago newspaper dispute, which resumes Tuesday.
The United States announces in its semi annual report to Congress that new atomic bombs are much more explosive than older weapons. The Atomic Energy Commission says further developments are in progress and had hinted earlier of stronger arms than those used in Japan or Bikini Atoll.

A fatal head on collision on the Collidge siding seven miles west of American Falls ends a 36 hour freight tie up. Three crewmen on the Union Pacific diesel freight died James D. Cawley Harold C. Lee and Loris L. Walker with the other crew members escaping unharmed. The crash left a million dollar wreckage and the exact cause remains undetermined as crews cleared the site between Borah and Coolidge.
The White House said President Truman is willing to meet Premier Stalin in Washington. Presidential Press Secretary Charles G. Ross noted there is no official Russian word on such a meeting and that Truman has long said he would be glad to meet Stalin in Washington.
Three family men died in the worst Idaho railroad crash to this date. On the Coolidge siding seven miles west of American, James Daniel Cawley Harold Charles Lee and Lorris Layne Walker perished. Cawley, 55, of 655 Hayes, engined for Union Pacific for two years and father of nine, was among the victims. Continued on Page Three.
In New York police say 40 year old Elmer Stanford wounded a priest in a confessional and was captured after a large gun battle at a second floor rooming house on East 69th Street. Neighbors report Stanford claimed he did not fire priests. Police used tear gas during the operation.
Judge Isaac McDougall set February 10 for the trial of F. M. Bistline's protest of assessment on properties in North Second where Motor Transit offices are located. A January 14 trial date had been canceled by the court.
Jewelry valued at 257500 dollars was taken from the Bel Air home of market operator Thomas FR. Winans. Police said the burglary occurred while he and his wife slept. Missing items include an 80000 dollar ring with 24 carat diamond and several other diamond pieces totaling the loss.
