National steel shortage hurts production across automakers as GM and UAW resume negotiations on wages and union security amid a 77 day strike. Henry Ford urges lifting price controls and warns of shutdowns if steel and parts do not arrive, citing daily losses and idle lines.
The army will allow families of officers and top noncommissioned officers to join them overseas for the duration of an extended occupation. Priority goes to families agreeing to remain two years or more. eligibility covers commissioned and warrant officers and certain civilian employees. Housing, food, and medical care must be certified, with preference to those with longer service since Pearl Harbor. Applications must originate with the service member overseas.
Col L M Cosgrave, Canadian member of the far eastern advisory commission, warned of signs of resentment among tens of thousands of repatriated Japanese. He said rural attitudes are hard to quantify but must be watched, with counterintelligence needed to limit subversive activity. The exiles include some from the United States and Canada, mainly demobilized troops from China.

A Wednesday blaze at the Heffner packing plant caused over 25000 in damage and threatened the lives of Melvin Heffner and his family in an upstairs apartment. Heffner saved his two sons ages three and six from a flaming bedroom. they escaped with minor burns. Mrs. Heffner estimates losses exceed 25000 including about 4000 in beef and 29 cattle butchered yesterday. The firm is operated by Ernest Heffner and his sons Melvin and Milton.
Belgian civilians described a December 12 1944 massacre near Saint Vith during the Battle of the Bulge. A German officer used unarmed prisoners for target practice then had a Nazi armored vehicle machinegun the group, killing 129 prisoners and finishing off the wounded as soldiers searched them.
China completed a unity session process led by Chiang Kai Shek with General Issix presiding. The political consultation conference adjourned 21 days after convening, after Chiang hosted delegates at a hall of ceremonies dinner following approval of subcommittee work by the Kuomintang standing committee.

Mr and Mrs George A Bender formerly of Twin Falls Idaho and recent Boise residents were aboard United Air Lines Mainliner in Boise en route to Sheffield Illinois. They wed Monday at Twin Falls after meeting at the University of Idaho Southern at Pocatello where both studied.
