Federal emergency funds were sent to western states hit by January blizzards though new snow and cold slowed relief. Nebraska faced worsening suffering as deaths rose and livestock faced starvation while relief work continued in the Rocky Mountain area.
Idaho lawmakers defeated a bill to repeal the chain store tax after lengthy debate. Rep. Tom Bell led for passage, arguing the tax is unfair. Rep. Henry O Leary urged keeping it to aid small merchants. Revival effort planned when the House reconvenes Monday.
Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Vishinsky is said to be gravely ill from a nervous disorder at the Karlsbad sanatorium in the Hotel Imperial. A staff member reports he cannot be seen and cannot concentrate, prompting concern among staff and a nurse.
Rampton Barlow announces candidacy for city mayor in the April nonpartisan primary. He has served since 1945 as supervisor of music in Pocatello public schools and lists Idaho birth and western heritage. He owns property, is married with three children, and has deep Idaho roots tracing to Anson Call and early Caribou County settlers.
In Kiel bay the hulk of a sunken German U-boat yielded more than 70 bodies including men women and children. The submarine apparently carried refugees fleeing the Russians in 1945 when trapped and sunk by Allied aircraft. Most victims were from Danzig with 54 identified.
Jean Pellum won a fully equipped silver streak Pontiac and Mrs H L Neider won a super de luxe Plymouth for having the top two scores in the Pocatello Tribune circulation contest. Awards were presented at Chief theatre by Mayor George R Phillips and judges including George N Green and E Norman Vaughn.
Herbert John Burgman a 52 year old Minnesotan and former U S embassy clerk and statistician was arrested in Germany and brought to Washington to face treason charges. Prosecutors say he broadcast propaganda for Germany during World War II and refused repatriation camp after invasion. He then worked for German short wave radio making English broadcasts to the United States and troops.
Strikes without warning hit the city as physicians report a swift onset of intestinal influenza. Patients suffer pains and high fever up to 104 degrees, with several cases at local hotels and two or three doctors among the afflicted. Hospitals are busy but doctors say the illness is not yet alarming and responds to treatment within a few days. County health officials note widespread activity.
H Byron Mack said he received a telephoned appeal from James Stewart reservation superintendent at Window Rock Arizona for immediate aid. Ten planes are needed in ten days to airlift feed to snowbound stock unreachable by road to prevent starvation. U S Air Force officials were contacted to extend haylift operations already serving snowbound flocks in eastern Nevada and western Utah.
In North Hollywood California a 90 pound mother, Mrs Loren L Stevens of Canoga Park, gave birth to twin boys weighing a combined 14 pounds at Valley hospital near Van Nuys. The babies are the heaviest twins ever born at the hospital and both mother and infants are reported doing well. The family also includes a 3 year old son named Jack. the husband is a contractor.
Senator McMahon announced Congress plans to inform Soviet citizens and satellite states about atomic energy and the atom bomb. He argued that prior ignorance has distorted views on military and international control and urged education to lead to enlightenment and possible agreements.
Five more Air Force planes departed McChord Field Washington to participate in Operation Haylift the aerial feed drop for starving livestock. Four C-47s headed Friday to Fort Riley Kansas to serve as a base for flights over Casper Wyoming while a C-82 joined eighteen other flying boxcars in hay bomb runs over Nevada cattle herds.
The Community concert program featuring Vitya Vronsky and Victor Rabin was postponed from Monday Jan 31 to Saturday Feb 5. Secretary Mrs. Frank Perry said the change occurred because the pianists are snowbound at Ames Indiana.
The Truman administration urged Congress to scrap court injunctions used to block national emergency strikes and replace them with a voluntary cooling off procedure. It called for repeal of Taft Hartley and a revived Wagner Act with improvements, and warned that erasing Taft Hartley would drop union restrictions including anti communist affidavits, political spending bans, and the closed shop.
Photographer John Dominis and pilot William Waggoner stranded near a Utah sheep camp signaled no to a rescue plane survey. National Guard hay lift planes scouted the area while road crews closed in. rescue by air awaits clearer roads.
The Chinese communists insist arrest of Chiang Kai-Shek and other war criminals on their list must come before peace talks. Acting President Li is isolated in Nanking with cabinet members missing, as red armies idle along the Yangtze. The broadcast also calls for re-arrest of Lt. Gen. Yasutsugu Okamura who was acquitted by a Chinese court.
A Yokota air force base two story barracks fire in Tokyo killed five American soldiers and left 10 others believed missing. At least 15 more injured, five seriously, as Staff Sgt Carl Nilson alerted others. Barracks housed 90 personnel and recovery of five bodies—one identified—was reported. Search continued for missing personnel.
Idaho Bar Commission testified before the House Judiciary Committee against a bill that would nearly eliminate bar association examinations. Boise attorney J L Eberle resisted tying graduates to practice without tests while sponsor Sen Herman Welker and others advocated the measure. Bar commissioners Hunt Merrill Marcus spoke against the bill.
