Mexican officials dismiss the Durango uprising led by the Arrieta brothers as minor. The war department reports troops sent to quell rumors of Canatlan seizure and Durango threats. Arrietas are said to number about 200, while federal forces exceed 2,000.
In Mexico City on January 29 AP reports newspapers discuss whether President-elect Harding will send a personal envoy to Mexico. Americans R B K Creager of Brownsville and Elmer Dover of El Paso arrived, with rumors they may be his representatives, though both say they came on business.

Des Moines report says the Rock Island railroad will reduce its operating force by 30 percent in this district effective February 1. General manager C. W. Jones stated the workers will be rehired as business conditions improve.

The plan calls for disarmament by July 1 and penalties similar to Versailles with a conference set for Feb 28 in London.
The Army announces retrenchments including a forty percent cut in the quartermaster general's civilian payroll. Soft and easy supply items are eliminated as part of the period of ration reductions.
