Allied forces advanced up to two miles in heavy snow northeast of St Vith capturing Bullange Herresbach and Holxheim. They reached within a mile of Germany and brought the main west wall works within six miles artillery range.

The War Production Board exempted five areas from the February 1 brownout, including the Pacific Northwest and most of Texas. The Northwest exemption covers Idaho Utah Montana Washington and Oregon due to heavy hydroelectric use and energy conditions.
Private first class Stanley G. Croxall seriously wounded in action in Germany on January 6 while serving with the 379th Infantry. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Croxall of near Pocatello. He attended Pocatello schools, entered the army in March 1944, trained at Camp Roberts, and went overseas to France in November.
Carl VY. Van Anda, 80, retired New York Times managing editor, died of a heart attack. His household said shock from the death of his daughter Miss Blanche Van Anda, 57, at the Hotel Fairfax contributed to the fatal event.
Allied Superforts hit sea lanes to Tokyo and weapon depots around Palembang while B 29s carried out incendiary raids on Tokyo Iwo Jima and Hachijo island. Carrier groups under Vice Admiral McCain and Admiral Nimitz scored heavy blows destroying ships, planes, and Takao port facilities as Nimitz shifts headquarters closer to the forward area.
Five people were injured in a noon collision at the intersection of the branch road to Inkom and highways 30 north. Elwood Stephens and Jesse Hynas collided head on. Stephens and his three passengers including his wife Gertrude and mother Mrs J L Stephens were taken to General hospital in Downard. Hynas suffered facial injuries and chest pains. deputies expect charges pending further investigation.
Idaho secretary of state Ira H Masters and Democratic legislators urge U S senators to back Henry Wallace for commerce department head after arguing the nation voted for the Roosevelt Wallace program and against the Dewey Jones regime.
Lillian Williams 32 of San Angelo hitchhiked east and wandered City Creek canyon near Salt Lake City. She spent nearly a week in an unheated cabin surviving on beans and rice, wearing discarded clothes, with no matches and snow water. Two Boy Scouts found her yesterday.
The first Allied truck convoy, over 100 vehicles, reached Kunming crossing the Wanting border after 470 miles through Burma, marking a three year push to open a rail and road link to China. Chiang Kai-shek hailed it as a blow to Japan, and Stilwell was honored with a proposed road name. Maj. Gen. Wedemeyer warned of intensified action against Japan.

Col Edwin A Halsey secretary of the senate died early today at Doctors Hospital from a heart ailment complicated by preparations for President Roosevelts fourth term. He was 63 and had served the senate since 1897 and as secretary since 1933. He had suffered a heart attack about three months earlier.
Idaho House votes to place two prison reform amendments on the general election ballot and approves workmen compensation measures while the Senate rejects a constitutional amendment for four-year county terms. The session also sends a Thanksgiving date bill to the governor and proposes abolishing straight-ticket voting via a cross-ticket method.
Representative F. M. Bistline of Bannock resumed his Idaho House seat after a week away to attend President Roosevelt's inauguration in Washington. He noted U S Senator Glen Taylor of Pocatello working hard in D C and gaining support among lawmakers.
In Rome New York Miss Josephine Sanzone escaped injury when a clothesline rope broke sending her toppling from a second story window into a 20 foot fall into an eight foot snow bank. The rough winter weather provided the buffer as she landed head first but uninjured.

American air fleets attacked six rail yards and a tank factory in western Germany, striking Coblenz Hamm Munster and Kassel with daylight raids. RAF massed bombs on Stuttgart while Ruhr centers Cologne Duisburg Dortmund endured heavy strikes as German logistics strained under renewed Allied pressure.
Joseph H. Fowles 72, longtime Burley Idaho farmer and civic leader, died at his Ogden home Saturday after returning here two years ago. Survivors include his wife Ida Scholer of Twin Falls, a daughter, and seven siblings including Eli J. Fowles, Mrs. Prank Manning, Mrs. A. T. Gee of Burley and Mrs. D. E. Brave of Idaho Falls.
