Washington dispatch reports William G. McAdoo directing railroads to purge payrolls of legislative lawyers lobbyists and passes and to halt nonessential spending during government control. The sweeping order aims to save millions in the first year and hints at stripping top directors from rail firms.
Col H H Bandholtz, nominated by President Wilson for brigadier general, has served as chief of staff of the New York National Guard division at Spartanburg. In 1916 he commanded at Plattsburg training camp and is a veteran of the Spanish American War.
John W. Jones longtime publisher of the Rigby Star died Monday at his home in Rigby after a stroke. He was nearing sixty and active in public affairs. Survived by his widow four sons Irvin and William, and two sons in Nebraska. He led Idaho publishers as a former president of the Press club.

Notices to appear for physical examination are mailed by the local exemption board to registrants already classified in Class 1. Each registrant must attend Monday morning as local doctors begin the medical exams, with a list of Monday entrants to be published in Wednesday’s Tribune.
The 1918 plan urges a 30 percent cut in wheat use and 70 percent purchases for wholesalers and manufacturers. It promotes meatless and wheatless days, substitutes like potatoes and barley, and urges households to follow food administration suggestions to support the war effort. Washington Jan 29 The Red Cross notified Secretary Baker it is prepared to extend at home a camp service already run in France to help relatives stay connected with soldiers in training camps and hospitals.

He argues action is needed to distribute foods evenly among communities, cut waste, curb nonessential production, and prevent great losses of military sacrifices.
In Petrograd Trotzky tells the congress that Germany masked its aims with phrases while demanding what Russia cannot concede. He, with Mr. Kameneff, heads to Brest Litovsk to resume negotiations. The Bolsheviks split on peace, with a majority opposing peace on German terms and urging holy war.
A Stockholm dispatch reports the Red Guard has gained full control of Helsinki, Finland's capital, with unclear status of the Finnish government.
Washington reports the war department charges that Germany is violating the Russian peace agreement by withdrawing troops from the eastern front and transferring them to the western front.
Amsterdam January 29 reports the German emperor appoints Privy Councillor Haber as governor of the New Guinea colony. The Cologne Volk Zeitung notes this shows Germany will not renounce its colonies despite losing territory in the war.
Rome reports a heavy Italian assault on the northern mountain front breaking into enemy lines. Reinforcements and enemy planes were shot down as Italians held air superiority and took about 1500 prisoners while storming positions east of the Asiago Basin.
Berlin reports a violent Italian attack on January 28 along the Asiago Brenta sector, as per Wireless Press. The offensive targets the northern mountain front with heavy clashes and official statements tracking the action.
