In darkness 600 plus aboard two Chinese vessels, the collier Kienyuan and the freighter Taiping, were lost after a collision 100 miles from Shanghai. The Australian destroyer Waramunga saved 35 survivors, including Taiping refugees, and landed them in Shanghai. The Taiping sank while trying to reach Chu Shan island. Kienyuan went down in five minutes.
