Idaho stockmen report 10 percent of their 750 cattle rustled in 1933 and urge strict enforcement of meat inspection laws. Max Cohn cites losses including 20 percent of his herd. committee to meet with other cattlemen to oppose lax enforcement.
The Cache and Idaho Woolgrowers' associations urge continuation of Biological Survey work, citing a 3 to 4 percent loss in 1933 due to predators. Forester Sterling Justice notes budget cuts threaten the program, while sheepmen arrange grazing for 40,000 sheep on the Cache National Forest in 1934.
Samuel Insull may appeal for an extension of his residence permit beyond January 31 in Greece. The family reports they are not cooperating with authorities.
William Fox and J L McCarroll of Idaho Falls were pardoned today by Idaho's state board of pardons for the July 24 1931 murder of Gerald Clark at Newdale Fremont county Their conviction had prompted repeated appeals by attorney Senator Chase Clark and private affidavits from state witnesses claiming false testimony Governor C Ben Ross cited unjust conviction as the board's reason Bert Miller recused himself citing indirect interest The pardon takes effect immediately and was supported by Governor Ross and Secretary of State Girard while Attorney General Miller abstained from voting.
Samuel C. Powell of Ogden was elected president of the Utah state bar at its convention in Salt Lake City on January 27. Allan S. Tingey of Salt Lake City was named vice president and three new board members were chosen: Sam Cline, A H Christensen of Provo, and J Sweetling of Price. Powell succeeds M P Pope of Provo.
Utah leaders at the federation convention call for state control of liquor if repeal occurs, urge utility rate cuts, and push silver as primary money. David F. Smith spoke on agricultural recovery while Raymond L. Malouf, 19, of Glenwood, won a medal for Future Farmers of America work and placed second nationally.
Pope Pius addressed 300 South American Holy Year pilgrims and warned against materialism paganism atheism communism and Protestant proselytism. He said these perils threaten family life and undermine Christian values, noting Protestant efforts foster indifference rather than faith.
Boise reports farmers digging the large potatoes left in fields last fall as mild weather and rising prices encourage harvest. Parma newspaper editor P. McParlin Gaugh notes potatoes are in good condition, saying early frost did not reach them deeply.
Bits of hair, stomach sections, and other items from the 12 year old Lyda Southard poisoning trial were tossed into a Boise trash can after lying on laboratory shelves. W W Leonard testified traces of poison were found in Ed Meyer's stomach and hair, and the evidence was slated for destruction.
Yale's Dr Richards Lull describes in a Peabody Museum memoir how 37 species of horned eratosia inhabited North America along a vast inland sea from the Gulf of Mexico to northern Alberta. The horned giants measured up to eight foot skulls and 21 foot skeletons, fierce in combat with beaked neck crests and massive heads.
Paris raged as Royalists clashed with police following Premier Camilo Chautemps resignation over a pawnshop scandal. Rioters armed with chairs charged mounted and foot officers through the Opera district and Cafe de la Paix as firemen and guards aided. Blood was spilled in the hours long confrontation.
Harvey Shearston deputy treasurer of Adams County for 10 years confessed to Sheriff Lee Templeton that he embezzled 29000 dollars of county funds. Templeton said Shearston surrendered after expressing worry over his speculations.
President Roosevelt asked Congress for 150 million dollars to continue the emergency relief program, 100 million above the direct relief and civil works totals. Hopkins ordered state administrators to publish payrolls and purchase records as civil works faces scrutiny, amid resignations and graft concerns in Los Angeles and Chicago.
Harry Orchard, who served a 25 year life sentence for the assassination of Governor Frank Steunenberg, will tell a Boise church group how Christianity helped him. The pardon board approved the talk with Rev. Hugh Fourke announcing the event at the First Methodist Church. Orchard testified against Hawwood Moyer Pettibone after pleading guilty in 1905.

Emma C. Bergdoll requests President Roosevelt pardon her son Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, still a fugitive in Germany, to mark his birthday. Bergdoll, 40, fled the United States in 1920 after a court martial sentence and escapes in Philadelphia, later becoming a German citizen with a settled life in Europe.
Tom B. Boyd, former Kansas state treasurer, was found guilty by a district court jury of illegally taking $260,600 in bonds from state vaults last July. He faces two to five years on each count, with sentence deferred to February 10. defense indicated plans to seek a new trial.
