Practically the entire British navy flotilla chasing the sunken submarine M-2 moved eight miles to a new search area near Portland. The destroyer Thruster detected underwater signals as night fell and divers worked without success to reach the obstruction.
Gar Wood aims to push his world speedboat record beyond 110.85 mph on Indian River as changes to the Miss America hull are prepared. He trails Kaye Don’s 110.223 mph from Lake Garda, Italy, and notes the rough water nearly threw his riding mechanic, Orlin Johnson, from the boat yesterday.
Alfred J. Bird, 59, former assistant cashier at the State Bank of Sevier, is charged with embezzlement totaling more than $40,000 over eight years. He pleaded guilty to a $1,000 theft on January 7 and was sentenced to one to ten years in the state penitentiary. Bird deeded his property to the bank examiner guiding the seizure as the bank was taken over by state authorities.
Louis J. Taber master of the National Grange tells a senate manufacturers sub committee that farmers oppose the four per cent beer bill on social moral and economic grounds. He argues the 18th amendment must be retained and notes grain yields favor milk and pork over liquor. The exchange emphasizes the grain to liquor relationship and farm realities vis a vis beer.
Senator Dill in Washington introduced a bill making it unlawful to ship arms and ammunition to China or Japan. He argued the war there threatens world peace and said the United States should refuse to fuel the conflict. The penalty includes up to $10,000 fine and up to two years imprisonment or both.

Idaho Republican state central committee will meet in Boise on February 12 to set the time and place for the state platform convention. The attorney general says the convention must be held June 10 or later. R. P. Parry of Twin Falls issued the call. The platform will choose the new central committee and elect delegates to the national convention.
The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen held firm in secrecy while other railway labor groups met to decide on accepting a 10 percent wage cut or contest a larger cut sought before the labor board. Most unions had voted, but results were pending as delegates planned possible reports to railroad presidents.
